I walked into Waldenbooks today; there has been a sea-change...
Edited on Sat May-08-04 06:20 PM by TruthIsAll
I hadn't been there in a while, and I recalled having very negative vibes the last time. It had struck me as very much the typical Repug Bush book store back then about a year ago. I also remembered how some here at DU were saying the same thing, that they weren't stacking any liberal books, just right-wing garbage from the usual suspects.

Well, that's all changed now. A vertical book stand facing the entrance hits you right in the face as you walk in, displaying John Dean, Richard Clarke, Joe Wilson, Michael Moore and others.

And on the floor, right by the cash register, the extra copies are overflowing in a stack, waiting to replace the ones on the stand as soon as they are sold.

No Repuke books are displayed like this. Hannity and Coulter are on the shelves, all right, but not out in front; they appear to be leftovers. People have awakened to real writers and real truth. And this is Boynton Beach, FL. Not exactly a hotbed of liberal passion.

Boynton Beach Waldenbooks convinced me today; Bush truly is toast. Not that I haven't said it many times here at DU. But seeing a Repuke store hawking the anti-Shrub torrent of great reads, made me feel more confident than ever.

2. Money talks
Waldenbooks' allegiance to the bottom line is probably greater than its right-wing bias. "Liberal" books are selling. Hot damn!

3. I realized Bush was toast at Easter
I have a very large family that is VERY political. They range from hard core libertarian to union liberal to neoliberal Republican to Evangelical to community activist. We always, always talk politics when we are together and the argument is loud and fun.

When I went home for Easter weekend, for the first time, politics did not come up.

4. I pray you are right.
My dad has certainly stopped talking up Bush and his henchmen...and he's always believed in their BS reasons for everything from WMD to tax cuts for the wealthy helping us all!:eyes:

If he's having doubts, there is hope (he hasn't admitted it to me yet though, he's just eerily silent).

Thanks for the uplifting post, I needed it after reading about the new pictures of atrocities in the prison. It's all so sad....

5. Thanks for the "heads up" from Boynton Beach! This is good news!
I've "ridden through Boynton Beach," and think it must be very much "mainstream America." I could be wrong... Maybe when Boca goes liberal I will feel there is "hope" for Florida!

I like Delray Beach, which seems the "anti-Boca" but have friends who just retired to Boynton. They are IBM all the way.. I like to think of them buying more "progressive" books there at "Walden Books." They would have been O'Reilly folks, imho.. but they are nice folks. Just need some "progressive" opinion to get them in shape.

8. I've seen some changes too
Right here in the heart of Repug-land-South Carolina. I had to special order John Dean's book last month. Today there was a whole stack of them in my Books-A-Million. But sadly, right next to it, was a book on Jimmy Carter explaining how he was one of the worse presidents in history and how he gave birth to the party of Clinton, Gore, and Kerry. Scary, huh? I guess they've written all the nasty lies they could about Clinton so they're moving on to every other Democrat they can get their poisonous claws wrapped around.

10. Polls say you wrong, friend
wish you were right.

But bottom line is what the polls pick up.

No big margin, just oscillating.

Might be new local waldenbooks manager. Anyway, books only show what thoughtful folks are into.

Lots of americans vote, never read a single book.

Anyone refute this? Hope you can, i really do!

13. The crescendo is building
The fact that Bush has spent over $50 mil on ads and he has the help of 24/7 wing nut radio and Faux News and CNN et. al. and the race is a draw says something about the climate out there.

People are just beginning to understand who Kerry is. When they feel that he is a better choice than Bush which is slowly happening, you will see the spread get wider. Like a crescendo, things are starting quite but they are building up a noise.

17. They don't have to read the books. Just stare at the covers.
And then read the summaries on the folds. That's all it takes.

Just the headline is enough.

16. This is good news,
and I hope it keeps coming. The polls don't vote, and it is a long time before November. If Moore gets his movie out, then things might change a lot. But I see nothing but a tale spin for this admin.
