US soldiers 'seen raping woman' in new jail photos
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/05/09/wtort09.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/05/09/ixnewstop.html

America was braced last night for new allegations of torture in Iraq after military officials said that photographs apparently showing US soldiers beating an Iraqi prisoner nearly to death and having sex with a female PoW were about to be released.

The officials told the US television network NBC that other images showed soldiers "acting inappropriately with a dead body". A videotape, apparently made by US personnel, is said to show Iraqi guards raping young boys.

Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, had given warning that the worst was yet to come when he gave evidence to the Senate armed services committee on Friday. He said he had looked at the full array of unedited photographs from the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad and found them "hard to believe".

"There are other photos that depict incidents of physical violence towards prisoners, acts that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," said Mr Rumsfeld, offering his "deepest apology" to anyone abused.

3. The fact that MG Miller, the AUTHOR of all this, is IN CHARGE of Abu
Ghraib now, and it hasn't been shut down, tells you all you need to know about the administration's "remorse" and priorities. They are only sorry they are "busted". They fully intend to continue the sorry show until the torch wielding mob shows up at their door.

Maj Gen Geoffrey Miller, the US army commander now in charge of Abu Ghraib, said the military would continue to run the jail, despite calls from some US officials to close it.

"Our interrogation teams have to ensure they can get the best intelligence, but within the requirements of the Geneva Convention," he said. "We may have made mistakes in the past, but I will guarantee you we will fix those mistakes."

5. again
when the rest of the photos are released, who is going to fucking call the apologists on their statements that this is "frat house" antics, that it's not torture, that it's "mistreatment?" will the public finally wake up and see that the majority of the media is nothing but a shill for this administration? if the sleeping american public doesn't wake up after this, i don't think they ever will.

8. The torture/rapes/desecrations make the whole Iraqi nation more dangerous
for our military personnel. Those responsible for it, whether by orders, tacit approval, or actual involvment in the acts of abuse, are guilty of also endangering the rest of our military personnel through the unnecessary violation of the people of Iraq.

I remember a long ago war where the foolishness or stupidity of officers who ended up putting their troops in unnecessary jeopardy was rewarded with a sort of on the spot justice. Yes, I recall hearing about many strange accidents which befell those who cost their comrades too much somewhere in Southeast Aisa.

If the parties guilty of these war crimes can be positively identified, perhaps some will find themselves tossed out to the enraged populations.
The people need to be shown this behavior against them will not be tolerated or they will logically surmise it is policy. War criminals have to be dealt with. To not punish is to invite a rage against all our troops they have not earned.

There certainly seem to be forces in the US command who are determined to sully the honor of our troops to the point of assuring jihad. Our troops had better weed them out in the field. And we at home need to assure that their masters and apologists are dealt with in the court of public opinion to the degree that they will never hold any office again.

Pluck the Chicken Hawks.

12. Amazing that it comes out of a right-wing rag like the Telegraph...
...but...I go back to my earlier thread and say as long as there are armies engaged in war this will happen...always has...always will. The sure way to eliminate the problem is to get rid of the capability!
