I have recently been reading John Dean’s excellent book,
”Worse than Watergate.” In it, Dean makes the case that Bush is remarkably similar to Nixon in his obsession with secrecy and hidden agendas, and that this secrecy inevitably leads to sinister ends. He also describes Dick Cheney as the real mastermind behind the administration. Dean quotes “beltway insiders”:
“Bush {is} the nation’s chairman of the board, Cheney {is} Americans chief executive.” Before the 2000 campaign, Cheney was CEO of Halliburton, and had a great interest in the oil business. Quoting Dean’s book:
In 1998, after three years in the oil business, Cheney shared with a group of oil-industry executives the essence of this business philosophy. For Cheney, it all boiled down to business: “You’ve got to go where the oil is,” he told them. That meant trading with the enemy, and regimes ruled by leaders who employ unspeakable horrors against their own people proved to be good places to do business. Under Cheney, Haliburton did business with Iraq, Iran, Libya, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Azerbaijan…
The BFEE and Cheney were both in the oil business and had previous business ties with middle eastern countries. One of Cheney’s latest projects at Halliburton was buddying up to Azerbaijan’s dictator, Heydar Aliyev, responsible for ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijan’s Armenians. Dean states:
Clearly, Azerbaijan’s oil was irresistible to Cheney. The Caspian Sea area oil reserves are believed by many to equal, if not exceed, the reserves of Saudi Arabia.
It seems clear what their objective is with the current Iraq war:
Establish an American beachhead in the middle east from which to conquer oil-rich regions, including the Caspian Sea.Taking a look at a map of the middle east, and noting the location of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, it seems transportation of this landlocked oil to the sea will be needed, whether by Iran or Afghanistan.
Quoting the BBC:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2297379.stm
… Iran has urged Caspian oil producers to pipe their oil through Iran, despite US sanctions. … There are huge oil reserves in land-locked Kazakhstan, but it is difficult to get the oil to coast for export. … Piping the oil south through Iran and out into gulf is the quickest and simplest route. …
Also, the failed UNOCAL Afghanistan pipeline deal with the Taliban might be the true cause of the Afghanistan war, and would explain why U.S. forces remain in Afghanistan, and our current disinterest with Bin Laden.
With the onset of declining world supplies of cheap oil (“Peak Oil”) this has to be their real objective. What do you think?
