Why would they put this persons picture or name on the front page? I hope he's protected.

You've seen the grotesque photos of U.S. soldiers smiling cheerfully next to stacks of Iraqi prisoners stripped naked.
But the scandal may never have reached the public eye if not for the conscience of Army Spec. Joseph Darby, the 24-year-old reservist who brought the pictures to the attention of investigators.

"It took a lot of guts for him to do what he did," his wife, Bernadette Darby, told the Daily News. Darby slipped an anonymous note under a military investigator's door in January about the stomach-churning treatment the prisoners were subjected to by fellow soldiers. He later turned in a CD-ROM with 1,000 photos documenting the atrocities, according to a recently disclosed internal Army report.

1. a message to anyone else who may be thinking of coming forward???
common sense would seem to be to keep his identity confidential.

2. disagree

putting everything out in the open is what keeps the person alive.

naming names, facts and figures keeps the person alive.

saying out loud that their life is in danger will keep them alive.

5. Darby
Acted like a hero.A true soldier doing the right thing.
Not many of those left it seems.

I gotta wonder if a few of those military suicides once spoken about a few months ago are people like Darby losing it? People who are not bullies and sociopaths ,but people who believed in a lie who were too intimidated to tell the truth out loud, yet could not stand witnessing the torture around them? What do you do in that situation under that stress far away from home surrounded by bullies who think rape is a "prank" How do you cope with evil people in power telling you what to do in a 'military culture' that demands obedience and to sell your inner locus of morality to the next highest rank?
It's a question worth asking.Because seeing torture done by your fellow soldiers to prisoners must cause some folks ones with souls horrific emotional pain .Witnessing torture hurts you if you have a conscience and you have empathy like a functioning human being..

3. The great majority in the military strongly support Darby.
I'm a vet and if it was up to me he'd be wearing sergeant's stripes by now. I was in the infantry for ten years. The infantry troops are the ones dealing with the Iraqi people in the street on a daily basis. The front line troops are angry at the MPs that committed these crimes, not SP4 Darby. The rear echelon MPs have made the grunts work only harder.
