Thomas Hamill: real American moron
Edited on Sun May-09-04 11:55 AM by Neo Progressive
As the story in Late Breaking News says, Thomas Hamill the "brave" truckdriver of Halliburton who "escaped" from the hostage takers in Iraq, has said the Iraq mission HAS to continue. Considering his role is as pivotal as the average Micronesian, his opinion on the matter is worthless.

However, the story has some interesting (really FUCKING stupid) lines which is almost begging for further commentary. Here goes:

They tortured him by falsely telling him he would be released within several days, shackling him, brandishing weapons and threatening his life, he said.

WHAT? Okay by that logic, every fucking US soldier who had their "tours" lengthened by the Department of Defense is being tortured by Bush and Rumsfeld because they're being falsely told when they would be leaving Iraq!

Hamill initially hadn't planned to make any statements this weekend, but he changed his mind after viewing media coverage of his escape and return. Still, he said, "I want to keep this low-key.

How absolutely disingenuous. "I wanted to keep this low-key," so I only invited the American media for this press conference, and told "Le Monde" to fuck themselves.

Hamill, who works for Halliburton Corp. subsidiary KBR, said he would consider returning to the job in Iraq but worries about how it would affect his children.

Typical conservative chickenshit. We have to complete the mission, but I want no parts of it. (He's not going to return).

God and this guy's going to end up writing a book too, lying about what happened over there, and being used as a puppet of this administration why Iraq was a good idea. "If we hadn't gone to Iraq, Thomas Hamill would be a redneck Mississippian truck driver. Since we went to Iraq, he's a redneck Mississippian truck driver with a book deal."

11. The real torture lies in his reason for going there
...in the first place. He was unemployed and uninsured and his wife needed heart surgery.

3. First I don't want to burst his bubble but the treatment he describe is
not torture. As far as I know you can tell him lies, show him that you are armed and restrain him.

4. Why so much hostility for such a minor player?
As you say, his role in the larger conflict "is as pivotal as the average Micronesian."

Let's save some of our anger for Bush, who got us into the whole mess.

And his name is Thomas, not Mark. You're thinking of the guy from Star Wars.

8. Because he is an exagerating lying little shit
who continues to support the illegal invasion and occupation and complains that he was "tortured" when clearly he was NOT.

5. Gee, how did he get out of his "shackles"? Is he Houdini
Or did that ransom money from Halliburton ("we don't negotiate with 'teraists'") help grease those shackles loose.

What a dingbat. Guess he got a bonus for going on TV and saying we should stay in IraqNam (although he won't return)

I'll bet he would be much happier if he had gotten the type of humane treatment that we've been giving to Iraqi prisoners.

If only he had merely been kept naked with a bag over his head, dragged around by a dog leash, and forced to perform degrading sexual acts while being photographed, and threatened with death if he didn't comply.

If he had only been subjected to such mild and treatment as that, he would probably be going on about how humane his captors were, even if they were sometimes given to a little juvenile hijinks.

If only the Iraqis would start emulating our own high standards of prisoner treatment, then no one would have anything to complain about.

14. When he makes stupid comments like that during this time
I think not. He's going to claim torture when he was simply lied to by hostage takers, while our government calls what happened in the prisons "abuse but not torture"? Bullshit is bullshit, and I'll call it when I see it.

15. well, I disagree
seeing as how he had no inclination what was going on in the iraqi prisons he had nothing to base his experience against. He isn't our government, he's another citizen of this country like you and me.

We do, we saw both. He, on the other hand, probably did suffer from some mental torture from being cut off from his family, not knowing what his outcome was gonna be or whether he'd ever go home or even live.

It's not the same as what the Iraqi prisoners suffered, I agree, but I just think that because someone happens to be used as a political pawn(Hamill byu the repubs), the side he is being used against (us I guess, although I don't necessarily agree) doesn't have to hate the guy.

I personally think its great he was reunited with his family and it's actually a "good" story that has come from this shitty war.

I think it's petty and cowardly to attack a man who's shoes you havent walked in in this case, even if his comments do not coincide with yours.

16. Hamill reportedly took the job with KBR
to pay for his wife's heart surgery, so I have a hard time begrudging him his book deal. KBR isn't going to pay for it, since they went into bankruptcy to settle asbestos lawsuits.

18. that article is absolutely hideous. It's like it was written by Bushco
I felt the same way about the article.

But I don't hold anything against Hamill. The guy's just some poor shlub trying to provide for his family and got caught up in the shitstorm.

torture.

20. What this about him keeping Le Monde out? Furthermore, this is the rub
as I see it. I believe he lost his little diary farm because the big corps. pushed him out of business. Then he's forced into an insane money-fuelled war started by an admin. run by those big corporations, to work for a big corporation dangling a fat check in front of his face. The man was in debt, he was desperate. If anyone should wake up to this racket these big corps. have going on it should be this guy!

But I guess he's another totally blind to reality. He's just a pawn in their game. And now he sees away for to cash in himself. Fuckin' sickening!
