ANYBODY remember a news program 3 months before 9 11 ?
with the second in command of the Taliban. I need to know the man's name. He had a short beard, with dark hair , and appeared to be younger than most of the other Taliban leaders. He also was usually used as the "PR" man, and was the person most often speaking for the Taliban and Bin Laden.
This news program aired approximately 3 months before 9 11. The interview of the Taliban second in command, contained statements made by him that the Taliban had people ready to go on suicide plane hijacking missions, with the target being symbolic buildings in the US, but did not name specific targets.
I don't know who the interviewer was, or even what network it was. I am just posting this to see if anyone else saw this story.
If I could come up with a link, the Bush co. would have a REAL hard time saying "We had no way of knowing he was targeting buildings". It was national TV. PLEASE someone tell me you saw it too, and may even have a link, or a transcrpit.
I want the Taliban second in command's name, the interviewer's name, and network. Any info would be appreciated. Thank You.

PESHAWAR, Dec 6: The Taliban supreme leader, Mulla Mohammad Omar, agreed on Thursday to surrender control of Kandahar on condition of a general amnesty for Taliban forces and top leadership.

(snip)

The Taliban have agreed to surrender Kandahar, Zabul and Helmand provinces in southwestern Afghanistan, a Taliban spokesman Syed Muhammad Haqqani told the BBC Pushto Service.

Edited on Sun May-09-04 10:21 PM by Mobius
would also be greatly appreciated. Syed Muhammad Haqqani, said in an interview in June, 2001, that Taliban suicide hijacksers were already in place to fly into buildings. If I could just find that story.

8. I don't think this is him, he WAS second in command, but died in April
.
.
.

Mullah Muhammad Rabbani hailed from Qandahar and was aged 38 when he died in April 2001. He belonged to the Kakarh Tribe. He was the second in command of the Taleban movement behind Mullah Omar. He was also the head of the Council which is in charge of the Taliban's government in Kabul (The Kabul Shura). During the 80's, he fought the soviet invasion in the ranks of the Hezb-i-Islami faction of Maulvi Yunus Khalis mainly along with Commander Abdul Raziq.

13. A young (30 or so) Taliban "Foreign Minister" was in America at that time
Edited on Tue May-11-04 09:13 AM by Bozita
IIRC, he was here to do something at the UN. His English was poor at best.

I remember him being on the Charlie Rose Show on PBS.

on edit: I remember him distinctly due to his age. I'd never before seen a "Foreign Minister" so young. He totally lacked the language skills and understanding that his position usually requires.

Revealed: The Taliban Minister, the US Envoy and the Warning of September 11 That Was Ignored

by Kate Clark in Kabul

Weeks before the terrorist attacks on 11 September, the United States and the United Nations ignored warnings from a secret Taliban emissary that Osama bin Laden was planning a huge attack on American soil.

The warnings were delivered by an aide of Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil, the Taliban Foreign Minister at the time, who was known to be deeply unhappy with the foreign militants in Afghanistan, including Arabs.

Mr Muttawakil, now in American custody, believed the Taliban's protection of Mr bin Laden and the other al-Qa'ida militants would lead to nothing less than the destruction of Afghanistan by the US military. He told his aide: "The guests are going to destroy the guesthouse."

Defending the Taliban
The Taliban's 24-Year-Old PR Man

By Bill Redeker

March 23 — It's not an easy job: coming to America to do public relations for Afghanistan's Taliban government. But 24-year-old Sayed Rahmatullah Hashimi might be the man to do it.

Rahmatullah, a foreign ministry official, speaks fluent American English, which he learned while growing up in the squalid refugee camps along the Pakistan border. He also speaks four other languages, and wears clothes — a light grey silk turban with matching scarf — that have a more Western look than the black and dark brown attire typical in Afghanistan.

He spent the week rubbing elbows with congressmen and American diplomats, delivering a well-rehearsed defense of the Taliban's demolition of two huge, ancient Buddha statues carved out of the cliffs at Bamian.

Rahmatullah says Western ambassadors and UNESCO had proposed funding a restoration of the statues at a time when 700 Afghan children are dying monthly from drought-related malnutrition.

"Nobody cares about our people who are dying for lack of food and water. But everyone cares about these statues," Rahmatullah said in an interview.

His argument is open to debate. The United Nations has been providing drought relief in Afghanistan for months.
