I spoke yesterday with a good friend of mine who lives half a block from where Justice Souter was attacked.
He said that his condo association receives reports of any crime like that, and that he understood that Justice souter had been attacked by three "kids" (he thought that the report indicated that the attackers were most likely 14-16 years old). He said that the report did say that it was odd that the kids attacked Souter, because he was returning home from an evening jog, and obviously not no money.
The neighborhood (5th and N Sts, SW) where the attack took place is a "mixed" neighborhood -- a place where Justices of the Supreme court live a block away from public housing. It is not unusual for crimes like this to occur.
In fact, my friend told me that two hours after Justice Souter was attacked, a young woman was attacked in about the same location -- again, by three "kids". The woman was litening to a CD, and had a case full of clothes that she was carrying. The attackers knocked her to the ground, and took he CD player and her case of clothes. She began to scream very loyudly, attracting the attention of the folks in the neighborhood (including my friend). As soon as my friend heard the woman screaming, he called 911, and the MPD came right away. He thinks they apprehended at least one of the attackers.
