Six bad apples? Sounds like those in the military know the score
A leading military newspaper editorialized that US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld set the tone for the prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq by refusing to give captives rights due prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions.

"This was a failure that ran straight to the top," said the editorial appearing in the May 17 edition of the Military Times weeklies.

"Accountability here is essential -- even if that means relieving top leaders from duty in a time of war," it said.
Owned by Gannett, the Military Times publishes the Army, Navy and Air Force times, weeklies that are widely read by servicemembers and distributed on US military bases around the world.

Responsibility, it said, "extends all the way up the chain of command to the highest reaches of the military hierarchy and its civilian leadership."

3. It's a shame they won't organize and
go on strike for a day to show their displeasure at letting the little guys take all the heat.

5. This is why they're directing them all to FOX with that "leaked memo"
telling them "NOT to go to Fox" which only has the Executive Summary vs the full text- they don't want those soldiers to see the full text which can be found here: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/graphics/pdf/0505041report.pdf

10. Lol. You are absolutely correct! There are a few things here
Edited on Mon May-10-04 09:47 PM by Tinoire
- a couple of white-wash reports
- Taguba's scapegoat report (1 pdf version in full & the others with stuff "blacked out") of which only the Exec Summary is on the net
- a full report
- and mountains of evidence that will never be put into a report

Is the full report available anywhere yet?

Thanks. I seriously need some sleep!

On edit, thanks. I'll look into this more tomorrow... Thank you

Rumsfeld specifically stammered that he had only read the Exec Summary and not the full report (a weasel out lie)

Anyone know where to find it?

6. Draft seems inevitable
I am afraid that the return of the draft is inevitable.

While finding volunteers to serve as foot soldiers seems to be adequate, finding people to serve in the highly skilled positions hasn't been.

The military will be forced to resort to the draft to get people into the highly skilled positions they need.

Whether Kerry or Bush is elected, there seems a certain inevitability to the draft. The difference is that I would be willing to serve under Kerry's leadership. I would not under Bush's.

4. Civilian leadership is accountable
In the military, enlisted people of low rank do what they are told. They don't commit acts like these independent of orders or at the very least, implied consent.

The abuses are too widespread for this to be an isolated problem.

With the ICRC (Red Cross) publicly warning the administration of the abuses, ignorance is no excuse.

Maybe Rummy and Bush really didn't know. I find that one hard to believe, however.

They were simply leaving no stone unturned in the search for weapons of mass destruction. Who cares about human rights when the reputation of the Bush administration is on the line.

If all went well, Bush, Rummy, the Wolf man, Rice, etc. would have been more than willing to take all of the credit. When things go wrong, they should be willing to do the same.

But that won't happen. That is a sign of true leadership, something this administration sorely lacks.

The military too has finally awakened to the fact that are being Am"Bush"ed" like the rest of America.

8. I don't belive a word of it.
they keep saying that so people will think thats where it ends. It's kind of like saying they have killed or captured 75% of Al-Quaeda's leadership, ya, ok like Al-Quaeda puts out an org chart. Bullshit.
