I have cut my driving considerably. I wonder if retail and other spending is down.

Hopefully people aren't going to MallWart as much for cheap plastic crap.

On edit - deleted <nt> Changed my mind

5. And I was bitching about $2.25 a gallon today.
I guess we are getting screwed in every way. I really wish I didn't need a car and could get by on public transporation. But I'm miles away from a bus stop.

7. North of the border...
...gas is $.82 per liter, which comes to $3.64 CDN per gallon (roughly). That's just locally. In Vancouver, according to the CBC this morning, they're paying $1.01 per liter--that's right at $4 per gallon Canadian. Wicked.

It occurs to me that Bush has a difficult time connecting actions with their consequences. The prices being paid for fuel are no accident; his pals are lining their pockets like never before. But the marginal, excruciatingly slow recovery that's going on right now is going to be undermined by the outrageous summer pump prices, which will certainly come around to bite Bush in the ass. Inflation is already starting to rear its ugly head, and despite Greenspan's best efforts to maintain interest rates at their historic (and artificial) low levels, it looks like they will have to be raised significantly in the near future, and likely even before the election.

Further, given the astronomical deficits and the fears they cause in global investors, the value of the US dollar is declining, which causes OPEC members to jack up the price just to steady the value of the return on their oil. And you think its bad NOW?!? Just wait until they decide to redenominate their oil in a more stable currency--like the EURO. Oh well, at least my student loan (which I pay in $CDN) will be easier to manage when a dollar is worth 40 cents Canadian.

8. Yike...
It's 93.9/litre for self-serve regular in Halifax; I think the high-octane stuff is .1 cent below the buck a liter mark. Heh heh; my 10-year-old Escort's making the SUVs look worse every day.

9. Hey Hand!
Fortunately, PEI prices are Provincially regulated. But they're sure to go up again June 1. The only thing the regulation really succeeds in doing is to put off the higher price until the next month (which has the unfortunate corrollary of delaying the lower price until the first of the month as well). And I guess it gives you until midnight of the 31st to fill up at the old price!

BTW, thank god for our 2002 Honda Civic: 51 hwy, 39 city!

13. The NS gov't...
Is making the usual meaningless mumblings about "bringing relief", but they're not going to do a damned thing. They NEED higher gas prices because that brings in more tax revenue, and Hamm et al. are in deep trouble financially.

They recently had to "interrupt" (i.e., repeal) most of the 10% income tax cut that was their major platform plank because they finally couldn't continue denying that it was totally unfeasible. They'd been trying to make up the lost revenue through increased user fees and higher taxes elsewhere (liquor, tobacco, etc.), but the figures never came close to adding up.

Result? Income tax gone, higher user fees and other taxes intact... arseholes.

It'll be interested to see how the vote on their alleged budget goes this week. If the NDP doesn't back it, the Tory govt. is toast...

12. Wow, Vancouver prices have nearly reached Japanese prices
About 12 years ago, the price for regular unleaded in Japan was 120 yen/liter, or about CDN $1.00 at the time, while gas was 55-60 cents/liter in Vancouver. Now Japanese prices have come down to about 102 yen/liter for same, but Vancouver prices have nearly doubled.
