Twins graduation...the real reason...
Is it due to him KNOWING the story about the abuse, rapings, videos, and pix were coming out and he didn't want to cause any problems at the twins graduation? I find it extremely difficult that him and pickles will NOT be attending an important event in their daughters lives, plus, they do NOT attend the same university.

3. My Take...
How bad would it look to totally lock down the campuses, cordon off several blocks away the protesters you KNOW will be there (I'm sure a reasonable number within the senior class). The idiot is simply afraid of how he'll look having to face a non-managed crowd---some of whom could be vociferous in their displeasure about teh Abu Gharaib situation.

Cowardice...yet again.

18. He Planned Not To Go Last Week...
Before the real shitstorm on this story began to blow and it sounded like a planned deal. One that he and Pickles had planned, just like blowing off his brother's "ahem" wedding.

The party line is "security" and how it would distract from the occasion...which I agree, it would. Bunnypants would fly over the crowd in AF1 then want to have the graduates start their engines. Or maybe he'd want to do a 2 hour sermon.

What I think is the twins prefered that mom & dad didn't bother to show. For the last 4 years their lives have been under a microscope...knowing anything that brings them into the limelight means a new round of sliming and joking. They see having their parents around, and his cabal of political handlers, it would pull their private lives back into the open. I didn't like that happening to Chelsea Clinton and haven't for the Bush Twins as well. Here's congradulating them on their accomplishments and keeping their noses clean the last couple years.

Dubya looks like the dad that is "too busy" anyway.

25. I think people here are blowing this way out of proportion.
I read an article on CNN(sorry couldnt find link), that said Bush wasn't going because he didn't want to subject the other parents to the security precautions that go along with a presidential visit. I think this is a very honorable thing to do(and probably the only honorable thing hes done so for!!).

27. I have to say that I don't EVER remember a "Presidental
Family" (even though they aren't really one since he didn't win and was appointed)being as disconnected as this bizarre clan. I mean think about it - they are NEVER seen together - and of course the irony is the "family values" mantra supposedly being a foundation regarding his belief system. I mean it's odd beyond imagination. If anything, they are the perfect example of a dysfunctional family.

36. That didnt' stop Bush, Cheney and their wives from speaking
at a total of 6 other graduations this year. They weren't concerned with the security messing up other people's kids' big day. These were some large universities, too, like Florida State and LSU. Interestingly, all the graduations the first and second families spoke, or are scheduled to speak at are in important swing states.

32. OK, I'm going to go ahead and defend Laura AND George here.
From all that I've read in the media, Laura puts the twins above politics, George, and common reason at times. She's a mother.

During Laura's most recent sans-hubby European trip, she brought Jenna along. There was a revealing article in the Washington Post about the trip; the reporter was critical of Jenna's jean-wearing, non-chalant arrival on hallowed European grounds. The European press was critical of Jenna's dressed-down, extreme casual-Friday appearance as well.

While reading that article and wishing that both Laura and Jenna had a little aplomb, appearing instead glamorous in front of the notorious European paparazzi, I felt a twinge of sympathy for Laura and Jenna alike. I can't really explain it. Picking on political families has always been a pet peeve of mine.

I imagine both Jenna and Barbara urged mom not to embarrass them with their massive security detail, metal-detectors and rooftop snipers; to let them have the kind of free-spirited graduation most college kids have. It's an amazing moment in life, a milestone you'll never forget.

I don't think this has anything to do with the current Presidential political crisis. They are likely only abiding by the wishes of their daughters.

What mother and father, wouldn't want to see their own children graduate from college? Both Laura and George are making a sacrifice here, and I'm willing to give them credit for it.

Let's choose our battles wisely; that's the thrust of this seemingly-apologetic rant, I guess. :-)

34. I disagree with both you and "I Like Chicken"
The Bushes are not normal parents and they don't have normal children. you are super imposing your values on them. The girls did not even bother to come home for Christmas. George has been the commencement speaker at several colleges. He wasn't concerned about those parents and students. He even gave the commencement speech at Yale last year and it is his alma mater and his daughter Barbara is graduating from Yale too. That shouild be a big event for a normal family. I think whoever posted that the girls don't want them there was right. I wonder if Babs and George Sr. will go? But then we still have the security problem, which ,by the way, don't the twins have too, as the result of their secret service? So you see, it really doesn't make a difference.

42. If Laura wouldn't be safe--what about the daughters?
The twins don't seem close to their father & I can't blame them. His appearance would also require the extra-heavy security required to (1) protect him & (2) ensure that he doesn't get upset by too much reality.

But I do wonder why Laura can't come. In herself, she's not controversial--so why would extraordinary security be needed? If mad terrorists are after her just because she's the president's wife, wouldn't they be after his children, as well? The girls will have their names called & will cross a stage to get their diplomas. "Safety" is not the reason Laura's staying away.

And I don't expect Laura & her children to be "elegant". However, when they're representing our country--at our expense--they could at least try to look decent.

Santorum jeered at graduation

THORNBURY (AP) - U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum was greeted with boos and turned backs Saturday while giving a commencement speech at Cheyney University, a historically black college.

"I know my selection as commencement speaker was not met with unanimous approval," Santorum said.

While most of the master's degree candidates remained seated, more than half of the graduating undergraduates stood and faced away from the senator in silent protest.

Santorum admitted that a conservative Republican might not be an obvious choice for speaker at an institution that claims to be the oldest historically black college or university in the country.

"Our great universities don't hide from controversy. They understand they have an obligation to challenge students. They have an obligation to challenge politically correct dogma and ideas," Santorum said. "They have an obligation to challenge students to face the truth."

Santorum encouraged students to rebel against today's self-centered culture, that says "if it feels good, do it," Santorum said. Instead, he said, the motto should be "if it's good for others, do it."

The quiet protest turned to a chorus of boos and jeers at several points, particularly when Santorum focused on family values and the percentage of black children born out of wedlock.
