There were about 6 or 8 couples on stage standing and it appeared from the expressioms on everyones faces that the orders were going to be carried out. It looked like one of member of each couple was to carry out the abuse on the partner facing them.

It then cut to the rest of the promo to tune in and watch.
Is the newest play for ratings during sweeps ?

Not that the above questions are rhetorival but no matter what the exercise it is totally unacceptable anytime and right now in the very poorest of taste with all the apparent inability of the American public to distinguish between abuse, torture and other types of violence.

I think the point of the exercise is for the men to realize how much it hurts when their wife is hit. The logic is probably that, when the men abuse their wives, they are in a rage to varying degrees and do not realize the harm they are doing (or don't care, since they're in a rage and make excuses to themselves for their actions). Forcing them to hit their wives when they (the men) are in a perfectly calm state and can make no excuses that she was "talking back" or whatever, forces them to fully confront the brutality of their abuse.
While I wouldn't go so far as to question Dr. Phil's methods, I would definitely agree that it has "ratings grabber" written all over it. Most of the people who tune in will probably be tuning in just to see the men hit their wives, and that's pretty sick.
