Lots of people think the abuse of prisoners is no big deal-
It is amazing how cavalier people are about this-I have talked to colleagues who either think the abuse is no big deal-basically they say the Iraqis had it coming-or they say the individual soldiers who did the deed should be prosecuted but the pictures should have been kept secret. Is it possible that Bush is going to be able to tough this out because of this attitude? I still think there have to be enough people who see this as such a stain on our national character that we have to get rid of the architects of the failed Iraq strategy - Bush and all of his minions. Tell me that this will happen. Otherwise I really do fear for our nation. If Bush wins in November he will see it as a mandate from God to stay the course as an imperial power.
Listened to AM talk radio all afternoon yesterday. One caller after another was screeching about how the press shouldn't have run those torture pix; all it does is undermine our troops in Iraq. The treatment of prisoners themselves was either not mentioned or it was CONDONED by these callers.
We're a nation of selfish, greedy ignoramuses who delight in taking from others--especially if we can take it by force. Bush is the perfect president for us at this point in history.
Decent people all over the country are shocked and appalled at what we're doing in Iraq. Ignore the screechers and the screamers -- they're trying to justify and rationalize their own opinions and past behavior. Just keep at it with the people who are only now biting their lower lip and shaking their head; they are good-hearted people who can be reached. Let the stinking vermin holler and yell. They only convince themselves.
