Idiotic review of MoveOn's new book

Not a bad person; just clueless about a citizen's responsibilities in this country and why democracy is a form of government that requires involvement. That someone would think that what makes this country great are our material inventions, rather than the very concept of our form of government, is just mind-boggling.

"Freedom Works--Force Doesn't, April 19, 2004
Reviewer: pam morgan from California, United States
This book would be more accurately titled "50 Ways to Force Your Opinions on Others While Wasting Precious Time".

America's Constitution was written to give everybody individual freedom. This book was written to abolish that thought and replace it with collective thinking, followed immediately by new legislation. First of all, it's all about what you can do to get the government to do for you; connecting with other political activists, learning how to get petitions signed, e-mailing your representatives, organizing a protest march, attending rallies, making political statements with art and fashion, taking a job in government, meeting with your Senator or Congressman, etc., etc.

There is nothing in this book that isn't political. And therein lies the fallacy of the left. The left believe that Government is all-important, and the right believe it is the individual and freedom.

To love your country Moveon wants you to be totally involved in the political process. All your time and energy should be devoted to politics, and getting others to think like you. Yet that is not the method that made this country great. This country became great by innovative thinkers who invented better products or ways to do something that benefited the vast majority of mankind. From the light bulb to the automobile to the Internet, all were created by Americans. They used their time and energy to CREATE things, instead of using their time and energy to COMPLAIN about things. Yet this is exactly what Moveon wants everyone to waste their time and energy on; complaining. Not very productive. SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ARE NOT WHINERS. The only people who whine are losers. And if they continue to whine, they continue to be losers, and unhappy ones at that. Because that is how life works.

Moveon talks about the "needs" of citizens...I ask, since when did that become the government's business or duty? If I "need" a new car I do not petition the government to buy me one. But that is an easy example. What about when it's a big thing? How about clean beaches? If you take Moveon's suggestions, you would connect with others who don't like trash on the beach, organize them into a political activist group, participate in a protest march, petition the government to make a law about it replete with cleanup costs, and encourage others to only vote for those candidates who agree with your position. Whew, a lot of demanding to do, and after years of political maneuvering, debating and voting, the trash is finally removed from the beach at a cost to taxpayers in the millions. Not only that, but now the GOVERNMENT is in charge of keeping the beaches clean forever. That's another multi-million dollar project to fund.

Would it not be just as effective to use the time, energy, and people to organize volunteer clean-up groups? Perhaps get the Boy Scouts, or Girl Scouts to include Beach Clean-up as a merit badge, thus providing on-going clean-up efforts across the country. Now the beaches are clean, children have learned invaluable positive lessons about the environment, and taxpayers have a few more dollars to spend on something else that will grow the economy. All done without the government or politics involved at all. Creative individuals working in freedom beats government intervention every time.

This book wants you to feel bad that everyone doesn't think like they do, then use your time, energy, and money to try to force the issue to change, resulting in more government power to dictate how we should live our lives. Individual freedom ALLOWS a diversity of thought, which results in being more creative, more productive, and feeling a whole lot better.

If you want to Love your country, use the money that you would have spent on this book and laugh with your child while having an ice cream cone. It will make you and your child feel good, as well as help the economy. You will also learn more about LOVE. "

1. I'm at a loss for words
Is this person for real? I hope she doesn't come looking to the government when her kid "needs" health insurance. What kind of book did she think she was buying?

3. If the trash on the beach...
includes residue from an oil spill, the right wing would way prefer the clean-up to be voluntary; no pesky liability concerns for them.
