Why does the Seattle P-I publish Billy Graham?

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/graham/170712_billy11.html

You are right when you say Christians don't believe in reincarnation -- but I hope you'll understand why we don't, because a very important truth is behind our conviction....Think of it: Every sin you have ever committed can be completely cleansed, if you will turn to Christ in repentance and faith! Don't be deceived by a false hope, but put your faith and hope in Christ today

My LTE:

I've noted that you publish a column by Billy Graham. The most recent one revealed a lack of sensitivity and knowledge by Mr. Graham about those religions which express a view that includes reincarnation.

Religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism include views on reincarnation as an _expression of the intimate interconnectedness of beings and their actions. As such the notion that "sins" can be "washed away" without any consideration of the consequences simply does not match the experience of anyone I know.

Mr. Graham concludes his column with the words, "Don't be deceived by a false hope, but put your faith and hope in Christ today." This is quite close to saying that other religions besides Christianity are "false religions." I am sure that although Mr. Graham did not actually come out and say that, if pressed, he would answer that indeed, other religions besides Christianity are indeed "false religions." Would the Post-Intelligencer consider it acceptable to publish articles that denigrated Christianity as a "false religion?" If not, then why allow Christians to say things tantamount to this about other religions, especially when the second or third largest religion in the state of Washington is Buddhism?

and he answered as he believes...I suspect the paper would be willing to publish a similar column by well known figures in other religions...you should suggest that...

3. I suspect they wouldn't.
As I said in my letter, imagine the hue and outcry that would ensue if someone had a column suggesting Christianity was a "false religion."

The P-I is not the NY Times; and the Times has, in the past, censored Wendy Kaminer who was a bit too up front about her atheism.

Unfortunately, I think this is part and parcel of the recent trend towards "mainstreaming" the religious right.

And yes, it's probably about money.

2. Why? Easy....
There is only one reason why any newspaper decides to carry specific columnists, or specific articles.

Money.

As in more subscribers. More subscribers means they can charge more money to advertizers.

See how that works?
