Clarkies, help
I'm in a discussion with a friend (albeit a furstrating one) and I'm trying to make the case for a Clark VP (I engage in debate that goes beyond my personal repferences sometimes).

I shot down his "He doesn't do well on TV" argument by pointing out that Clark was a popular commentator on CNN. Now the bar has moved and it is that Clark is not a proven voter favorite (specifically as compared to Edwards.) How would you counter? Anybody know the number of votes Clark got in the primary before he dropped out; and maybe where Edwards was at that point too?

1. Just tell him where Clark won.
Oklahoma

2nd place in battle ground states: New Mexico, Arizona (and one other)

Just a start

2. Plus he got in very late in the game and is a relative new-comer
to stump politics...

3. Yep, still beat Edwards in NH despite
Edwards momemtum out of Iowa. But the best reason is Clarks record of achievement in his life making command decisions, his intelligence, and his stance on the issues. Throw in that he does very well in polls of the battleground states.

What convinced you HFishbine?

10. "Convinced"
should come with a caveat. I'm convinced Clark is worthy as a VP, still not my first choice, but better than Edwards. The final convincing came from this article:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/0405.clark.html

I've long thought the problem with the approach to Iraq and the Middle East was the lack of a strategic objective, from Bush or Kerry. Clark not only lays one out that is humane and honorable, but he supports it with an incredible understanding of history and geopolitical context. I consider it to be the most thoughtful examination of our approach to the Middle East I've heard or read by any politician.

I'm very aware of Clark's other achievements and qualifications, but my friend is focused solely on electability, he wants Bush out, period.

4. Isn't he the only one beside Kerry who won a state
that was not his home state ? And even before he announced, his numbers were tremendous. And when he is on the ticket the numbers are going to shoot up again.

5. Edwards won SC
his birth state, but not really his home state since he was raised, was elected from and lives in NC.

6. You might want to remind him...
Edited on Tue May-11-04 02:51 PM by GainesT1958
Of our EXTERMELY diminished standing in world affairs because of Dub & Co. and the Neo-Con/P.N.A.C. cabal. Remind him that Gen. Clark was Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, and commanded the Kosovo operation in which NOT ONE U.S. soldier, Marine, sailor or Airman was killed. You may also want to point out to him that, in view of what has been revealed to have happened in that Baghdad prison of late, having a great general on OUR side--who respects the rules of the Geneva Convention--is a pretty good idea. Plus, he'd make sure our vets are treated right once they return home--not to mention those currently in Iraq or Afghanistan. His education policy plank--one from which Kerry is emulating much--is excellent, especially in proposing college and community college scholarships!:D

Also, with Kerry/Clark you've got Navy/Army. Pretty good conbination in wartime!:7

:kick:

7. I voted for Clark in the OK primary
so needless to say, I thought he would make the best President(still do). However, why he would make the best VP choice is because the focus of the election, at least now, is now terrorism and the Iraq war. Obviously, he would help the ticket from that standpoint. Furthermore, he also taught economics at West Point...so he has a decent understanding of how the economy functions.....bush sure doesn't.

9. I recommend going to this site if anyone wants to get to know...
Wes Clark, it is a tremendous resource, imo.

http://www.us4clark.com/mediaclips.html

It has many, many video clips of Wes from when he testified before the House and Senate, prior to his entry into the race, to recent appearances.

11. Opposed war, holds W responsible for 911, thinks we may get to withdraw
if they don't want us.
If that doesn't do it for you, I don't know what. better 2 war heroes than 2 senators who voted for the war.
Of course, Dukakis's campaign manager will tell you Kerry needs a lawyer.

12. I'd just like to say Clark does very well on TV
I first saw him on Scarborough Country (just channel surfing, honest) and he wouldn't let that weasel spin anything. He was great. Also, that episode where David Asman from Faux News was trying to question Wes' patriotism, Wes' let him have it. There's a clip of that floating around somewhere.

My $.02

19. Clark is great on TV. That's why Russert has him on MTP all the time.
Who cares if he is a proven voter favorite? People vote for the president, not the VP. Besides, Clark can take Arkansas and Edwards will never help with the Carolinas.

Clark is a four star general and we need him against a four star asshole. I can't believe I typed that. I don't like profanity.
