This is how Bush fights the "war on terror?" What a joke.
May 11, 2004

26-year-old American from Pennsylvania was beheaded to avenge the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers, and the militants who killed him videotaped the crime and posted it on a radical Islamist Web site.

Terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi may have either authorized the execution or actually performed the act himself, U.S. officials believe.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,119615,00.html

March 02, 2004

With Tuesday’s attacks, Abu Musab Zarqawi, a Jordanian militant with ties to al-Qaida, is now blamed for more than 700 terrorist killings in Iraq.

But NBC News has learned that long before the war the Bush administration had several chances to wipe out his terrorist operation and perhaps kill Zarqawi himself — but never pulled the trigger.

<snip>

The Pentagon quickly drafted plans to attack the camp with cruise missiles and airstrikes and sent it to the White House, where, according to U.S. government sources, the plan was debated to death in the National Security Council.

<snip>

The Pentagon drew up a second strike plan, and the White House again killed it. By then the administration had set its course for war with Iraq.

<snip>

The Pentagon drew up still another attack plan, and for the third time, the National Security Council killed it.

2. I just have one question...
Why in the world, when the US is getting beat about the head with graphic images of abuse, would radicals behead and then release a video that all-but-wipes those images away?

5. Think: Hatfields & McCoys
When there is a blood feud on, good sense takes a back seat. The killing of this man was horrible, and cannot be defended. Natch, our fellow Amurkins (of the "all Arabs are the same" variety) will use this to excuse our own evil doing.

Finally, and most importantly, these folks WANT * in office for 4 more years. He's the best recruiter they can find.

7. My guess
The Arab world as a whole has been humiliated by the pictures of the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. To Al Qaeda, they are the ones that are the first who are standing up to the evil Americans and snapping back at the ones holding the leash in Iraq. So, being the first ones shown fighting back against the evil American humiliators will win them big props in the Arab world...

just a guess on my part.

13. Revenge?
BTW, it won't "wipe the pictures away". It'll remind people what happens when you torture and beat and kill prisoners, take pics, humiliate them and laugh about it (not you, I mean a lot of Murkins).

Payback is a bitch.

24. No no didn't you get the memo ~ It is the Democrats releasing photos
that cause them to hate us. It has nothing to do with prisoner torture. It is all about Democrats releasing pictures . So it is all Democrats fault that they hate us. If we write anything or show any pictures we are inciting them to hatred. It has nothing at all to do with our military torturing and killing hundreds if not thousands of women and children and innocent Iraqis.

17. They want to provoke US
They don't care about negative stories in the media, they want an allout war between the West and the Muslim world. They want a strong reaction from the US, they want people dead not only our side but also dead Muslims: they are trying to maximize hatred on both sides. Bush & other fascists in the US play right into their hands.

6. Is this the group that was let go at the beginning of the war?
In June 2002, U.S. officials say intelligence had revealed that Zarqawi and members of al-Qaida had set up a weapons lab at Kirma, in northern Iraq, producing deadly ricin and cyanide.

9. The Zarqawi scandal

http://www.johnquiggin.com/archives/001608.html

Abu Musab Zarqawi, leader of the group Ansar al-Islam is one of the most dangerous Islamist terrorists currently active. He is the prime suspect for both the Karbala and Madrid atrocities and the alleged author of a letter setting out al Qaeda's strategy for jihad in Iraq.
Although he has become increasingly prominent in the past year, he has been well-known as a terrorist for many years

For some years, until March 2003, Ansar al-Islam was based primarily at Kirma in Northern Iraq, in part of the region of Iraq generally controlled by the Kurds and included in the no-fly zone enforced by the US and UK. In other words, the group was an easy target for either a US air attack, a land attack by some special forces and/or Kurdish militia or a combination of the two

Nothing was done until the invasion of Iraq proper, by which time the group had fled

8. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is a US puppet
We created Al-Queda... so many parallels to how Hamas was created.

It's strange that this group is always conveniently around to reinforce why we need a war on "terra" everytime Americans start questioning this madness. Videos of Bin-Laden, statements, beheadings. What a joke. And I hear from certain DUers who watched the video that the executioners were very pale-skinned & wearing white sneakers :shrug:

12. PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE!
The White House had numerous chances to take out the people responsible for the beheading of Berg. They refused to do so, because it would undercut their case for war against Iraq. These guys were holed up in Kurdish territory not under control of Saddam, but BushCo decided they needed their presence there so they could mention "terrorist" and "Iraq" together repeatedly to bullshit us into the war. Spread this news to the four corners of the Earth, goddamnit!

14. Here's a different take on the Berg beheading....
Remember who is ostensibly taking credit: al Qaeda. As an organization, al Qaeda's main goal is to see America and Israel COMPLETELY out of the Middle and Near East. It hopes to obtain that goal by uniting all Islamic people in a Jihad against the United States and Israel. With anyone other than Bush in power, this would be a laughable goal. However, every day Bush remains in power.....

And so al Qaeda has two short term goals:

1.) Become the leader of this Islamic revolution

2.) Keep George W. Bush in power as long as possible

So, does today's beheading advance these goals? Yes on both counts.

Can we expect al Qaeda to come to Bush's aide in the future? Unfortunately, yes.

Could this explain why Bush has had three chances to take out Al-Zarqawi and demurred? Quite possibly.

18. Al Qaeda: "WE WANT BUSH TO WIN: "
The statement said it supported U.S. President Bush in his reelection campaign, and would prefer him to win in November rather than the Democratic candidate John Kerry, as it was not possible to find a leader "more foolish than you (Bush), who deals with matters by force rather than with wisdom."

In comments addressed to Bush, the group said:

"Kerry will kill our nation while it sleeps because he and the Democrats have the cunning to embellish blasphemy and present it to the Arab and Muslim nation as civilization."

"Because of this we desire you (Bush) to be elected."

In the final analysis, the White House, Pentagon and CIA concluded it was not worth risking American lives to go after these people and not worth the adverse publicity that would surely follow any U.S. operation inside Iraq.
