A quick word on racial stereotyping today re: Berg's "white" killers

I've seen several posts exclaiming that Berg's killers were white. I've seen one saying "They look too stout."

I'm NOT saying there isn't some weird crap going on with this issue. But let's be clear: Not all Muslims are skinny and brown. There are Muslims from Chechnya, Bosnia, Serbia and elsewhere that are as "white" as anyone else.

Are you implying that white people are human and the rest are not?

many afghanis are very white as well as many Iranians. I worked with a blond, blue-eyed Iranian as well as others from the ME who had light skin and eyes.

This whole bit about the Berg captors being "white" (argument based partially on their posture, of all things!) is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard at at DU.

This is something that gets missed by calling them "brown skinned." Iraqis come in various complexions. I had a college friend who was Iraqi who was as white I as I - she looked like someone from Greece or Italy.

I think that it is good that people are thinking critically and examining evidence like this carefully, but in my view, the image is inconclusive as to ethnicity of perpetrators. Probably the video and audio/linguistic analysis will shed more light on who these guys were than still images.

and thinking critically about what we are seeing is a good thing. Speculations like this, regardless of whether you agree with it, help to flesh out happenings in which you have limited visual evidence. There is always someone who has a take that you may not have thought of.

I don't think people can be faulted for having learned that anything related to our gov., particular bush and his, should not just be taken at face value. Or that everything is just as it appears to be.

The video does give more of a sense as to how these people moved, clothing, etc.

Berg had been arrested by the Iraqi police. FBI shows up at his parents house asking all sort of accusatory questions. The parents filed suit against the govt and Berg was released the next day. April 6. He was supposed to come, then he disappeared. Now he shows up as the guy who is beheaded. By 5 fellows who don't necessarily look Arab. Unusual, that's the point.

given that I don't have cable and have only seen the footage downloaded from the web. How do we know they said they were al qaeda? Personally my Arabic is a little rusty. Did they translate it somewhere and if so does anyone have a link to a transcript?

There is some strange stuff about this whole thing, and my tinfoil is firmly in place.

HOWEVER, Arabs range in skin tone from very light to very dark. As do Mexicans, Spaniards, Italians, etc. ALL are Caucasian.

An Arab family that I was close to in Michigan had every spectrum of skin tones and they were all blood related. The father was rather dark, the mother had a medium skin tone, one of the kids had a skin tone similar to their father and two of them were rather pale. One of the daughters even had green eyes. Shocking!

I would think that DU'ers would be the first to point out that you can't always tell someone's nationality, ethnicity and religion by skin color.

So, still having a very jaundiced view of any US conspiracy here, I did wonder a few seconds about the body language of the terrorist on the far left of the video, the little I saw, with all of them standing there with Berg before them. He seemed different from other terrorists I have seen standing with their victim before them. Gangly. Fidgety. Shifting weight, bending his knee in, like a model in Seventeen. Maybe just a guy from the taxi squad with ADHD?
