The Saddam-9/11 Link Confirmed

By Laurie Mylroie
FrontPageMagazine.com | May 11, 2004

Important new information has come from Edward Jay Epstein about Mohammed Atta’s contacts with Iraqi intelligence. The Czechs have long maintained that Atta, leader of the 9/11 hijackers in the United States, met with Ahmed al-Ani, an Iraqi intelligence official, posted to the Iraqi embassy in Prague. As Epstein now reports, Czech authorities have discovered that al-Ani’s appointment calendar shows a scheduled meeting on April 8, 2001 with a "Hamburg student."

That is exactly what the Czechs had been saying since shortly after 9/11: Atta, a long-time student at Germany’s Hamburg-Harburg Technical University, met with al-Ani on April 8, 2001. Indeed, when Atta earlier applied for a visa to visit the Czech Republic, he identified himself as a “Hamburg student.” The discovery of the notation in al-Ani’s appointment calendar about a meeting with a “Hamburg student” provides critical corroboration of the Czech claim.

Epstein also explains how Atta could have traveled to Prague at that time without the Czechs having a record of such a trip. Spanish intelligence has found evidence that two Algerians provided Atta a false passport.

The Iraqi Plot against Radio Free Europe

Prior to the 9/11 attacks, the Czechs were closely watching the Iraqi embassy. Al-Ani’s predecessor had defected to Britain in late 1998, and the Czechs (along with the British and Americans) learned that Baghdad had instructed him to bomb Radio Free Europe, headquartered in Prague, after RFE had begun a Radio Free Iraq service earlier that year.

5. What's "new" that hasn't already been disspelled?
This report was dismissed long ago. I don't see how the generality in this article proves anything. How many "Hamburg students" are there, by the way?

Dubious Link Between Atta and Saddam

A document tying the Iraqi leader with the 9/11 terrorist is probably fake. PLUS, how terror financiers manage to stay in business WEB

EXCLUSIVE

Newsweek
Dec. 19, 2003Dec. 17 - A widely publicized Iraqi document that purports to show that September 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta visited Baghdad in the summer of 2001 is probably a fabrication that is contradicted by U.S. law-enforcement records showing Atta was staying at cheap motels and apartments in the United States when the trip presumably would have taken place, according to U.S. law enforcement officials and FBI documents.

The new document, supposedly written by the chief of the Iraqi intelligence service, was trumpeted by the Sunday Telegraph of London earlier this week in a front-page story that broke hours before the dramatic capture of Saddam Hussein. TERRORIST BEHIND SEPTEMBER 11 STRIKE WAS TRAINED BY SADDAM, ran the headline on the story written by Con Coughlin, a Telegraph correspondent and the author of the book "Saddam: The Secret Life."

Coughlin's account was picked up by newspapers around the world and was cited the next day by New York Times columnist William Safire. But U.S. officials and a leading Iraqi document expert tell NEWSWEEK that the document is most likely a forgery—part of a thriving new trade in dubious Iraqi documents that has cropped up in the wake of the collapse of Saddam's regime.

"It's a lucrative business," says Hassan Mneimneh, codirector of an Iraqi exile research group reviewing millions of captured Iraqi government documents. "There's an active document trade taking place … You have fraudulent documents that are being fabricated and sold" for hundreds of dollars a piece.

Mneimneh said he hadn't seen the Telegraph document that purports to place Atta in Baghdad. But he, along with senior U.S. law-enforcement and intelligence officials, said the claims of an Atta trip to Iraq in the months before the September 11 attacks were highly implausible—and contradicted by a wealth of information that has been collected about Atta's movements during the period he was plotting the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

25. here's one
(snip)
"On the controversial question of whether an Iraqi intelligence officer met one of the Sept. 11 hijackers in Prague last year, the report is completely silent.

Czech intelligence sources reported the meeting last year but U.S. authorities said earlier this month they had no evidence of the alleged meeting between hijacker Mohammed Atta and Iraqi diplomat Ahmed al-Ani in April 2001.

The meeting would have been the only piece of evidence linking Iraq with the Sept. 11 attacks, giving the Bush administration another reason for a possible military campaign to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein."

This is part of the Party-Loyal Bushevik Sub-Media which has no fact-checking apparatus and no desire for one.

This is the Moral Equivalent of Nazi or Soviet Party Newspapers.

And just as believable.

21. What baffles me
is that not only is this a very dubious claim, it's an all-but-irrelevant one. Suppose it were true? An intelligence official and a terrorist had a meeting? "I'm shocked- shocked- to find gambling going on here!" That's what intel officials do - they're spies, you see. It doesn't mean, by any stretch of the imagination, that Iraq gave al-Qaeda any aid, or even that al-Qaeda expected any; it just means that one of them wanted to tell the other something. It might have been "Keep your damned recruiters out of Iraq." It might even have been "Cut any deals with the US, and we'll fly a plane into the palace in Baghdad." Nobody knows.

Show us money or equipment changing hands. Not an alleged meeting between a couple of mid-level guys.

19. This is Laurie Mylroie
The necons' favorite conspiracy theorist. She also wrote a book claiming that Saddam was behind the WTC bombing in 93 (?) and several other terrorist attacks in the 90's. Basically, in her view, Saddam was the evil mastermind behind just about everything. She has about zero credibility.

30. And my recollection about the Czechs
Is that they said originally they had a surveillance camera photo of the Iraqi official talking to someone who looked sort of like Mohammed Atta. Later they said it wasn't Atta after all.

That hardly amounts to "The Czechs have long maintained . . ."
