man, you guys gotta introduce a Logic 101 course for people like these. tillman chose to believe bush's lies, which got him killed, rather than making an informed decision about something so dramatic in his live. rall is attacking more the media than tillman for blindly branding tillman a hero, rather than discussing the reasons (bush's lies) which made the dude throw a lucrative career away.

Ted Rall got death threats. He can report those threats to the authorities, but since his remarks were unpopular*, I wouldn't expect the authorities to bother very much with investigating the threats against him. Hence, he must have the right to protect himself from the violent threats levelled against him by the Angry White Men of the Right. These people on the Right are very violent, hateful, dangerous people. Unlike most of us, they are not squeamish about guns. If they are the only people who are armed in this country, the Left will continue to get their asses kicked.

*For the record, I disagreed with the contents of his column about Pat Tillman.

Not a bad piece, but the article seems to stress political expediency, rather than the wisdom of the policy.

It's fair enough to say that going to die in a Bush oil war is a dumb idea, but Rall was wrong because he picked

a. the wrong war - most democrats support the Afghan war because is WAS (at least partly) about getting al Qaeda. Afghanistan was in the stone age compared to Iraq and did need our help (although they're not getting much now).

b. the wrong target - people universally admired Tillman for giving up his wealth to do what he saw as his patriotic duty. whether he was fooled or not is irrelevant. He went out of a sincere desire to do good, and Rall called the dead man a RACIST. Why did he do that? Does he have some secret videotape of Tillman professing his disgust for "ragheads"?

c. the wrong time - Tillman's body was barely cold and Rall chose to start kicking it.


Rall has every right to put out whatever he wants. He can be very good, but he has stepped over the line before. His columns also exhibit a kind of hateful hysteria I prefer to avoid. I wouldn't be surprised if his 'toon is pulled from a lot of outlets.

As for the freeper death threats, I wouldn't be surpised if Bartcop, Will Pitt and others don't get such threats on a regular basis. Comes with being a pundit. He just got more than usual because the cartoon was more obnoxious than usual.
