How many of you use encryption for your emails?
I have 2 friend who are overly security conscious (read paranoid) so when I correspond with them they insist on encryption. I tried to convince my other friends, but they could not be bothered.

8. PGP
the common encryption system used now.
http://www.pgp.com/products/freeware.html
It integrates nicely with some email clients. Or try GNUPGPP
http://www.gnupg.org/

As the saying goes, sending an unencrypted email is like sending a postcard through the mail, anyone can flip it over and read your message.

3. my friends also couldn't be bothered
It doesn't help that PGP keeps changing ownership and it's a little difficult to use. I'd like to use it a lot more though.

7. Then switch to gnupg

http://winpt.sourceforge.net/en/download.php

It's open source and freeware, which is much better regarding security (because it doesn't use the patented IDEA algorithm). It would be impossible to implement back doors if the source code is free.

4. there are probably more than a few
on Du, if paranoid is the criteria for wanting e-mail encrypted.

I can't be bothered myself, guess I'm not a super spy.

5. I do everything in the open now.
I'm in sort of a "Dirty Harry" mode.

6. You articulated my experiences
me playing the role of one of your 2 friends. Most people have not heard of PGP, it seems to me.
I am convinced that everyone should use it for more important e-mails. There are still freeware versions of this concept (gnu pg, cf. http://winpt.sourceforge.net/en/download.php).

I don't find it too complicated if used for only the important mails (eg containing political opinions, financial information).

9. 'Just curious...
What is your concern about expressing your political opinions? Or, rather, having your political opinions possibly made public?

I'm very open with my opinions (TOO open, some would say!), and realize it could come back to bite me in the a**. I'm willing to take the chance, though, because of a long-held belief that silence is consent. 'Not saying it's the right choice for everyone...
