Buying A New Car: Should I Get OnStar?
Decisions, decisions...

Really I would forgo it for myself, but my 13 y/o daughter will be driving in a few years and it might ease my mind. They DO advertise on Air America and everything! LOL...

Doesn't OnStar work with a satellite...but you can't get satellite radio with it right or can you?

3. Get her a cell phone
it's cheaper and will work if she has to make a panicked phone call from outside the car, too.

11. That's what I ended up doing.
Car came with free year of Onstar. I could see car pulling out of the driveway and tried to call, only to be told car was out of area. Free, OK, don't pay unless you stick to the city and want a toy.

4. Yes! Get it! You'll love it!
Imagine that you're in a distant town. You're lost - and you really don't see anyone around that might be able to give you directions. Press one button, and a friendly voice comes on, greets you by name, and asks how they can help. They'll even stay on line and help you get where you're going!

Actually, OnStar works with the cellular telephone system, not satellite. If you want satellite radio, that's a separate option.

5. I dunno...
but their radio ads are hilarious...

The woman who lost her car in the parking structure...

The guy who locked his dog in the car...

Seems like you gotta be pretty dumb in order to get the value out of it.

7. I used it with a rental I had...
...and it was a great experience. First my sister got lost on the way to NYC, had a nice lady chat with her and direct her...Then we had problems driving down to Atlantic City, and had a nice guy literally guide us block by block...

8. Neocon star
You have to listen to alex Jones' parody commercial before you make your decision. In a hilarious diatribe with the Neocon star operator, the old lady can't figure out why her ignition is disabled and her doors and windows are locked with her inside, The Neocon operator informs her of her outstanding parking violations and asks how she will be remitting payment and regain access to her vehicle. She is then given the choice of direct debit or lethal injection...."UHH I'll take the lethal injection" she gasps

9. They're SCARY!

Frankly, I'd walk before driving with UpYourButtStar installed!
Those commercials are designed to make us comfortable with them knowing our whereabouts 24/7. Brrrr!

Man they just petrify me!

Or perhaps I'm channelling Dale Gribble...

13. I had it on a Saab.
Some places it is (or was, it was a couple of years ago) difficult to connect and they didn't know where the Throgs Neck Bridge was in NY. I was in So CT and had to call from the hotel room. It might be good for the emergency part which is cheaper too. If it is a Saab you are getting for some reason they can't open the doors if you get locked out.

15. It's worth considering.
They have some good packages. If you have to choose between this and satellite radio, go with the radio.
