Did anybody notice the less-than-enthusiastic response to his "I'm a survivor!" statement?

I heard a clip on Air America. They played the enthusiastic (but hesitant) response to "I stopped reading newspapers" in full then the "survivor" statement, which didn't seem to get the effect he wanted.

You think that the hand-picked dittohead types were skeptical about his ability to "survive" a real situation? I was going to say something about his "service", but I thought I heard that he actually had some sort of military time. Not in action, I believe, but did like a normal "peacetime" stint?
