is. If it's some milquetoast no-name, out-of-left-field kinda person (like LIEberman was for Gore), it would behoove Kerry to announce early as possible. But if it's someone truly dynamic, like say, Wes Clark, Kerry should plan the announcement for the most high-profile possible timing to scare the shit out of the repukes.
I hope Kerry goes for the Gold, rather than some mousy, limp, non-threatening kind of Veep candidate. In the end, whoever he chooses, will send a message about how threatened he is by being paired with someone who truly COULD take over the reins of government, as opposed to someone he would feel doesn't steal any of his thunder.
I'm HOPING Kerry's ego is sufficiently strong that he wouldn't be at all hesitant to choose someone who is truly dynamic, and also a strong leader. LIEberman was certainly NOT that kind of guy. Right now, I think the country would do well with TWO strong Dems in charge, working as a team....and I can see Kerry and Clark doing that. It would send a beautiful message as to who is in charge.
Kerry, of the two, has, by far, the most experience at working with the legislative branch and the judicial branch -- which a good president would need to have; and he's dealt with the budgets, agencies, courts, AND the public responses that politicians have to be able to understand. Clark, as former military, has made a career out of reporting to the Commander in Chief, so he KNOWS how to do that, and do it brilliantly. And he would view Kerry as the Commander in Chief. He would be the perfect VP for Kerry, in my opinion (for what it's worth), and such a VP choice would be a barn-burner announcement, if well timed.
