Michael Berg sign : War is not the ANSWER.
I saw this on MSNBC or CNN this AM. It showed Mr Berg putting this yard sign into his yard. I could not help but think of how torn this gentleman must be. His compassion and idealism is being seriously challenged by the death of his son. Yet, in his heart, he feels it is the right thing to do to put a sign in his yard that says, 'War is not the ANSWER'...We all must sympathize with this good man.

I thought I heard a reporter say that the sign had been taken down?? Anybody else see this?

1. Taken down by whom? He reminds me of victims of crime (i.e.,
relatives of murder victims) who are against the death penalty because they know it does not work.

3. I had a friend that went through just that issue
Her grandmother was raped and murdered by some teens. It was a death penalty state and she had always opposed it. In the sentencing part of the trial she had to stand apart from her family and affirm her opposition to the death penalty. It is a very hard road to walk.

7. Please tell your friend for me
that she has my profound respect.

The path of nonviolence is the hardest one.

I admire her.

2. Ironic that the Freepers ...
Are using the son's death as a "Nuke 'em all" rallying cry, but the dead man's next of kin has an opposite opinion.

Now would be the time for a compassionate leader to get up to the podium and remind people that the killers of Berg do not represent Islam or Iraq and we need to calm down the hatred a few notches ...

4. Not that this country is innocent...
It has killed countless Iraqis and Afgan women and children. Has it done all it can to prevent those deaths? The leadership in this country is also a failure so let's not sit around call the kettle black when we are the pot.

9. So - when should Spain Nuke the U.S.?
Edited on Thu May-13-04 12:57 PM by TNOE
No, don't FOOL yourself.

They have an American in custody for the Madrid bombing.

Should we have nuked ourselves after Timothy McVeigh bombed Oklahoma?

Bombing Afghanistan because of one single man - Bin Laden?

Bombing all of Iraq for one single man - Saddam?

16. Good one
seriously.

But this gives me a chance to say what I heard on our local Fox TV news this morning - and I MUST add that I was only watching Fox this morning because I was looking for a particular story....

But they were interviewing this older lady, probably 50's, and asked her what she thought about the beheading of Nick Berg - and at first I thought yea, here we go because she responded that people need to know and understand that war is hell, always has been - but then she added that "these people need to understand that we are freeing them and trying to bring Democracy to them" and that they just need to understand what we're doing is trying to free them and they just need to get with the program because the US will not stand for this - and then all of a sudden you saw the disconnect in her.... like what am I saying, she stumbled and tried to go on and of course they cut her off. She even confused herself, it would have been a great deal more amusing if it weren't so damn real. But she seemed to realize she was saying basically 'dammit, we're trying to free you at the barrel of a gun, so just shut up and like it'.

I don't think I described it here very well, but what the hell, I've already typed it.

22. I've heard 'man on the street' interviews with Iraqis who say just that
that they are ashamed that this is being done in the name of Islam, and that this is NOT what Islam is about.

Don't know if any leaders have, but FWIW...

14. There are times like this when I really wish
it was possible to personally contact people in the news.

This man and his family need lots of support. It would be great if we could all send them letters of condolence and support. Not that it would blunt their grief........but at least they would know how many care for them, and the stand this gentleman (and I use that term pointedly) is taking.

Unfortunately, if that were possible, then they'd also be getting death threats from the freepers.

17. I can only take comfort in knowing
that obviously this man has to be one great old powerful soul to have had to endure what he's endured - and remains true to his convictions. He was right from the beginning, as were most of us. Now, when will the rest of the world catch on?

24. Today the letters in the newspaper
are messages of support for the Bergs and calls for revenge against the people who killed him. Tomorrow the people who read about Mr. Berg's peaceful, anti-war beliefs will be writing "he should just shut his mouth, he has no right to criticize, he's helping the terrorists to win..." They have no sympathy for anyone but Bush et al.

25. Hmmm, that's one idea
Letters to the editor of the paper where they live.

Do you have any info on that?

You have pegged exactly the response I figured there would be, which is why I would like to add my voice to the support, rather than just sending "good thoughts".

so I'm guessing one of these papers would be their local paper:

18. Bless Him
his humanity should be admired and inspirational.

contrast Mr.Berg with the likes of Rush et al, none of whom
have been in a situation even close to what this man has gone through, and what you get is the best and worst of humanity.

19. When I Saw the Picture of Him on the Ground....
my heart broke once again. Every day this scene is repeated across the United States as the families of soldiers are notified of their deaths in this immoral war.

But in this case, someone choose to make an example of Nick Berg and now thanks to our wonderful media, we are all a part of this family's tragedy.

For the Berg family and all those who suffer this day...
May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and give you peace.
