Releasing more photos would be a violation of the Geneva Convention??
Edited on Thu May-13-04 12:45 PM by ibegurpard
Have I heard correctly? Is our government actually trying to use the Geneva Convention to prevent further release of evidence of our violations of the Geneva Convention?

Look here(the irony-impaired should proceed with caution):

http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGA1C69V6UD.html

"BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, making a surprise visit to Iraq in an attempt to contain the prisoner abuse scandal, said Thursday lawyers are advising the Pentagon not to publicly release any more photographs of Iraqi prisoners being abused by U.S. soldiers.
He also dismissed as "garbage" any suggestion the Pentagon tried to cover up the prison abuse."

<snip> (And here's the best part):

"The government lawyers argue that releasing such materials would violate a Geneva Convention stricture against presenting images of prisoners that could be construed as degrading, Rumsfeld said while en route to the Iraqi capital on a trip that was not announced in advance due to security concerns."

If my jaw could drop any farther it would be in Buenos Aeries.

1. I heard this on
NPR this morning, but I'm somewhat of a cynic so it just made me laugh.

3. Didn't someone just claim yesterday...
...that the Geneva Convention DIDN'T APPLY WITH THESE PRISONERS? If that's the case, then why are we suddenly so concerned about it?

I wish I could remember who it was who said this... perhaps a Republican congressman or senator?

Somebody help me out here...

4. It's true

Prisoners may not be made a public spectacle under the GC. This ignores the fact that such rules were ignored when showing prisoners suited the administration's goals, but more importantly, there is a way around this. Make the faces unidentifiable and release the pictures.

6. The pictures depict Geneva Convention violations
the fact that we would actually use the Geneva Convention to try to prevent release of more pictures, particularly when it has been argued that the Geneva Convention does not apply to them, is astonishing. If even HALF of the American public was awake these goons would be in prison.

5. Geneva who?
Shee-it man! This adminstration has as much respect for the Geneva convention as the tormenters at Abu Graib had for their Iraqi captives.

Besides, the pictures WILL come out, Geneva convention or no Geneva convention.

Could this bunch be any more disgusing, despicable, deplorable...??? Every time I ask that question, I get a resounding YES based on the next outrageous stunt that they pull! :grr:
