Need input for response to freeper
I have a friend who is the female version of Mark the Dittohead on Franken's show. She's pretty bad, so I avoid talking politics with her. Occasionally, she'll send me some rw crap, which of course I immediately delete. However, I'm kind of tempted to respond to this one (the picture is of * jogging with a solider who had one of his legs blown off):

"Attached is a picture of one of my best friends in the Army, Mike
McNaughton. We were privates together in 1990-1994. He stepped on a
land mine in Afghanistan Christmas 2002. President Bush came to visit
the wounded in the hospital. He told Mike that when he could run a
mile, that they would go on a run together. True to his word, he called Mike every month or so to see how he was doing. Well, last week they went on the run, 1 mile with the president. Not something you'll see in the news, but seeing the president taking the time to say thank you to the wounded and to give hope to one of my best friends was one of the greatest/best things I have seen in my life. It almost sounds like a corny email chain letter, but God bless him."

I'd love to say something like, "It's too bad the US refused to be a signatory on the International Land Mines Treaty that would ban the use of land mines -- this poor American, as well as countless others, would not have been maimed, or worse."

Or...."It's nice to see the "president" go jogging with this nice man. Just wish he would attend a funeral or two for the soldiers who ended up dying for his little war."

Any other suggestions?

1. Those Are Good Ones
But If The Picture And Story Are Genuine There Really Isn't A Whole Lot You Can Slam Bush For. I Mean, There Isn't A Lot Of Fodder Without Tarnishing The Maimed Man.

3. Checked it on Snopes.com
I always check RW propaganda here. However this story is true.

I support the war against the Taliban. However you can send her the latest casuality figures in Iraq and ask if W is going to work out with them too.

4. Let it pass.

I checked Snopes. This did, in fact, occur (except for the calling him every month or so; a doctor at Walter Reed contacted the White House on behalf of the wounded serviceman to accept the original invitation).

I imagine even Genghis Khan was occasionally nice to some stranger.

9. Genghis Khan was always nice to his men!
Which puts him a step above the current administration.

5. I'm actually glad to hear that story
When someone does good, don't go looking to negate it. It just makes you look petty. Keep deleting her emails if you don't like them, but don't feel the need to have a smart answer for everything. It only reflects badly on you.

6. Well, first of all admit that it does Bush credit, taken in isolation.
First, it's true. Second, as of yet at least he hasn't tried to make any political hay out of it. We haven't seen the pictures in his ads (or at least I haven't).

Then express the wish that Bush could be more consistent in his respect for the troops that have fallen as casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq. Remind her that Bush has failed to attend even one military funeral for soldiers killed in Iraq and that the Bush administration has gone out of its way to hide the caskets and otherwise pretend that they don't even exist.

I wouldn't take this opportunity to throw in her face the fact that McNaughton wouldn't have lost his leg if Bush hadn't sent troops to invade Afghanistan in the first place, and I wouldn't take any kind of nasty tone, especially if she is a friend. We don't have to slam-dunk Bush every time. Basically, this story presents him in a good light. There's no harm in acknowledging that.

7. George W Bush may be a very nice man.
I don't really know.

But I do know that he sucks as a president.

11. How much suction are we talking about?
Can he suck the chrome off a trailer hitch? Suck a basketball through a garden hose or maybe even pull 20 lbs of suction on a chain link fence?

10. Here is what I'd say

I thought Bush wasn't running anymore.

Seriously, it supports the growing evidence that Bush is interested in doing those things that interest him - running for example.

I wonder whether Bush devotes time and effort to a soldier or marine who was suffered injury

--- in an explosion or attack - when that soldier could have avoided injury/maiming if his/her equipment was better - or if they had the proper equipment.

-- a week or a day after the date that soldier/marine was to leave Iraq before the orders came in to extend the tour.

-- because his/her attention was clouded, thinking about the spouse or family back home scrounging for food, health care, housing and money to pay bills.
