2. It's a post 9/11 thing
MLB is a private organization, so there is no First Amendment issue. I don't see where it's necessary, but it doesn't bother me either.

3. The Halliburton hostage from Mississippi that escaped last week
threw out the first pitch at the Astros game last night -- and addressed the crowd. Of course, George, Sr. and Barbara sit front and center.

4. At most parks
They sing "God Bless America" during the Seventh Inning Stretch and have since 9/11. It's replaced "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in most parks. At Miller Park in Milwaukee they play that and still find a way to sing "Roll out the Barrels".

9. Yay for Milwaukee!
I remember going to Brewers games as a kid singing that song during the 7th inning stretch. They have the guy that slides into the beer barrel again too, right? Haven't gone to a brewcrew game in about 7 years.

10. Yep
Bernie Brewer... and of course they also do the 7th Inning Stretch Sausage Races which before this year, were the most fun you'd have at a Brewers game if you happened to be a Milwaukee fan.

Of course this year's club is battling in every game and it's a hell of a lot more fun to watch.

6. treacly jingoism
I know they do the Kate Smith rendition of GBA at Yankee Stadium in the 7th inning, but I don't know of any other park that does that on a regular basis.

Even more gross is "Christian Family Day" that several stadiums host - I inadvertently attended one last year and almost hurled.

8. another bad irving berlin song
but the fundies embraced it after 9/11 because it said God and America in the title. shitty melody and lyrics... i'd prefer to hear "America the Beautiful," our old national anthem instead

11. Are they STILL singing GB America during the 7th inning stretch?
instead of Take Me Out To The Ballgame?

God, I hate this nationalist, jingoistic crap infecting the one thing I love as an escape from the cheerleaders of war.

Come to think of it, why do they sing the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of sporting events? What do sporting events have to do with patriotism? I mean, why don't they sing "Look for the Union Label"..that makes about as much sense as waving the flag..

Soon, they will dispense with such formal illusions of democracy and just make us sing commercial jingles.

Very excellent question!

Indoctrination & distraction - a twofer!
