Berg as expiation for America's torture campaign doesn't
make sense. Why would the murderers, ostesibly Al Queada, not pick an American soldier, a true symbol of torture. Why pick this young man? Aren't there soldiers who have been captured?

Just another suggestion in this rather bizarre case.

1. A couple of reasons I could think of...
1) Do we really know the extent of the involvement of civilian 'contractors' in the torture scandal? Perhaps the Iraqis know more than we do on this front. I'm not accusing Berg of anything, it really sounds like he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but perhaps to Iraqi eyes, there is no differace between amarican soldiers and american contractors as far as the torture scandal is concerned...

2) It is estimated by the red cross that up to 90% of the iraqi prisoners were arrested by mistake. Perhaps they picked him to retaliate in kind.

In any case evil just begets more evil, we may have won the war to remove Saddam Hussain, but we've certainly lost the peace in Iraq, and I don't think that there's anything we can do to win it at this point...
