BIG: Police union that backed Bush in 2000 DUMPS him and ENDORSES Kerry

Police Union Rejects Bush, Backs Kerry

WASHINGTON - Presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry on Friday collected the endorsement of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, a police union that backed President Bush in the 2000 election.

"After three and a half years of disappointing leadership under George Bush, we need to change course in November and elect a president with a real record of supporting police officers and a lifetime of standing with law enforcement," IBPO President David Holway said...

3. I DON'T KNOW WHY THE POLICE EVER ENDORSED BUSH
I never understood that. Because the Republicans traditionally give the shaft to law enforcement and fire fighters by cutting salaries/benefits/letting people have Tek 9 firearems on the streets, etc. I have told some cop friends of mine in the past that Democrats want more police, better pay, and GUN CONTROL so the cops won't get shot at as much. I am glad they woke up and smelled the cofee. Yeah!

Most cops love the idea of putting perps to death, plus people think the pukes are the law and order party

4. I suppose that's good, but it certainly doesn't make me feel better about
Kerry that the same people who defend unreasonable searches and seizures, police brutality, the death penalty, punishment over rehabilitation, and draconian drug laws are supporting him.

7. Kerry was an honest prosecutor who understood PRIORITIES.
He's against the death penalty as part of the US justice system and discouraged the prosecution of marijuana users when he was running the prosecutor's office in Boston.

This union must be well aware of Kerry's stands. They just experienced the rightwing way of enforcing the law and they changed their minds, didn't they?

13. Bush lied about funding the police.
Bush lied about taking care of the health problems of the first responders.

He made everything more complicated without providing the money to make anything easier.

And states have had to cut back hiring because Bush has starved them.

They aren't thinking about searches and seizures. They are thinking about their own health and safety, their pensions, their jobs.

Bush lied.

More Cops Endorse Kerry: Reflects John Kerry's Strong Anti-Crime Record, Bush's Failures to Support Law Enforcement, Says Campaign
(Kerry Campaign Press Release)

JOHN KERRY HAS STOOD BY POLICE OFFICERS:
John Kerry Led the Fight for Additional 100,000 Police Officers on America's Streets. John Kerry led the fight to add 100,000 police to our streets through his work on the 1994 crime bill and its Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program. Kerry personally pushed the Clinton White House, the Justice Department, and members of Congress to obtain funding for the 100,000 cops program. Kerry "persuaded the Senate and the Clinton White House to finance a campaign pledge to put 100,000 more police officers on the street." (Boston Globe, 6/21/03; S.Amdt. 1202 to S 1607, 11/16/03; Reason Magazine. 3/94)

Kerry Worked With Law Enforcement Officials to Ban Military- Style Assault Weapons. John Kerry has strongly supported the current ban on machine guns and assault weapons-including AK-47's and similar weapons used by terrorists in Afghanistan. Police organizations including IBPO strongly support extension of the current ban. (RC 375, S Amdt. 1152 to S Amdt. 1151 to S 1607, 11/17/93; Orange County Register, 3/2/04)

Kerry is a National Leader in Working to Ban "Cop Killer Bullets." John Kerry is a national leader in promoting sensible oversight of ammunition sales which have no sporting value yet risk the lives of police officers. Kerry has strongly supported measures to crack down on armor-piecing, "cop killer" bullets. (S. 553, 4/10/97; S. 433, 2/16/95; RC 240, S Amdt. 3351 to S. 2312, 7/28/98; RC 116, S Amdt. 343 to S 254, 5/13/99)

As a County Prosecutor, Kerry Fought Crime and Put Away Murderers and Mob Bosses. John Kerry was the first assistant prosecutor of Middlesex County (one of the largest counties in the country) and won convictions in high profile murder, rape and mafia cases. Kerry led the prosecutor's office in a major modernization. "He launched initiatives that were innovative at the time: special units to prosecute white-collar and organized crime, programs to counsel rape victims and aid other crime victims and witnesses, and a system for fast-tracking priority cases to trial" and "is credited with reducing the backlog of cases." (Boston Globe, 6/18/03; Washington Post, 2/21/85)

Edited on Fri May-14-04 01:52 PM by dArKeR
this just go down to the bottom of the story and look for:

Ratings
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

A '5' would help the story stay alive.

'Franken' the picture. 'Franken' is a new word I've created in the American English language. Along with 'Franken Head' the anti of Ditto Head. That would be the moral 'Franken Heads' opposed to the immoral Ditto Heads.

39. As it is, the GOP/RNC had to dredge up the EX-commissioners
of the NYPD (Bernard Kerik) and the FDNY (Thomas von Essen) to endorse the Texas Shit-Shooter.

As a New Yorker, I can tell you that NEITHER character was beloved by their rank-and-file guys, and even less so after 9-11.

Also, as I've heard, the police and firefighters plan to join in on the demonstrations during the convention (via their unions).

(sigh!) Knowing the Greedy Oily Perverts, they'll probably be replaced by "private-contractor" security goons.

Gonna be a long, hot end of August in my area.

40. I blame the Bush guys for allowing 9/11 to happen. They had all
the warnings(Plural) and never even bothered to do anything, much less inform America. Whoever made that decision must have trouble sleeping, or they are in Delusion.

Many of my Brothers and Sisters died (I am retired Fire Capt) needlessly. They coulda PREVENTED 9/11 but for some odd reason, chose to ignore the warnings.

But their people all flew by private jets after the warning came in, so WTF???

26. Completely unsurprising news, but very welcome.
Given that the administration's philosophy is to eliminate funding for community policing programs, such as the COPS program, I was pretty much expecting law enforcement to endorse Kerry. Departments across the country are hurting financially, and this translates into more crime and the loss of lives.

Did anyone else read the cover story of the Washington Monthly a few months back? I believe it was titled "Bush's War on Cops." Ouch! But true...

31. rofl - a few CHOICE freeper comments......
(1) "It's only natural that Police Unions would prefer the Democrat. What else but liberalism could have created the crime wave that has not only kept their members fully employed, but during the Clinton Administration kicked the crime rate up to the point that America needed 100,000 more policemen on the streets. Not that Slick provided the funding for them though, but his intentions were good, and that's good intentions are good enough for a liberal."

Main points:
(a) crime is created by liberals, in order to employ police officers, so that those officers will support liberals.

(b) it's clinton's fault.

================

(2) "Anti-American Union Thugs."

Comment: At least freepers are consistent - they're even willing to call COPS "thugs", if they diss bush.... rofl

==============
(3) "We do have a class war. The 2 classes are those that pay taxes and those that consume taxes.
One group is predominately dem the other pubbies."

Comment: I'm confused about this poster's point - which class is s/he thinking are the dems? Do the bush tax cuts for the rich, etc. change which one is which? - lol
