Louisiana Legislature weighs Bill to criminalize Low rise and Baggy pants
Move over Alabama, you now have competition for your title of most backward state in the Union

DALLAS - Memo to Britney Spears: Make sure to forget those low-rise jeans next time you fly home to Louisiana.

And Ludacris, why don’t you pull up your pants and cinch them with a belt before you take the stage in Baton Rouge.

"Baggy Pants Bill"
House Bill 1626, also known as the “Baggy Pants Bill” states: “It shall be unlawful for any person to appear in public wearing his pants below his waist and thereby exposing his skin or intimate clothing.”

State Representative Derrick Shepherd’s bill would make any violator subject to three eight-hour days of community service and up to a fine of $175.

1. Well, as long as . . .
We've got our perspective focused on the important things in Louisiana and not on pesky little items like the miscarriage rate in Cancer Alley between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Unbelievable.

2. How frightening is that?
Let's hope this bill goes nowhere.

4. Derrick Sheppard...
Has just distinguished himself as, perhaps, the single biggest moron on the planet. With Chimpy as one of his competitors, this is no small task and surely must be admired in its own perverse manner.

7. This is RACIST! Pure and simple.
This is aimed at youth of color. It's sick. "Intimate clothing?" Give me a break.

10. Because...
It's like the opposition to zoot suits in the '40s--that was aimed at Latino youth. Though white young people wear these fashions too, they are clearly associated with non-white youth culture and that's what's threatening to many people. There's a real racist impulse here.

9. And it doesn't matter that the author of the bill is Black.
The proposed law is still racist.

11. The motives for this Bill are clear when you ask a few questions
Edited on Fri May-14-04 03:28 PM by Sandpiper
1) Who most often wears baggy pants? Answer: Young black and latino males.

2) Who most often wears low rise pants? Answer: Young women

3) Who are the majority of people who will be debating this Bill? Answer: Old white men

The motives for this Bill are racism and sexism, with a sprinkling of prudery to top it off.
