Boston Globe reader and Bush's corrupted English
English lesson for our leaders

May 12, 2004

THE BUSH administration seems to have a serious problem with reality. The most recent reality challenge is the policy of torture in both Iraq and Afghanistan, which the administration is frantically redefining as "abuse," "excesses," and "humiliation." We even have Secretary Rumsfeld describing footage of several American soldiers "having sex" with a female Iraqi prisoner. Let's have a little plain English here. "Having sex" with a prisoner is known as "rape." Systematic beatings are called "torture." Excesses that lead to death are called "murder." The hundreds of women and children in mass graves in Fallujah are the product of a "massacre." Taken together, all of these add up to "atrocities."

The dissemination of "incomplete information" from "imperfect intelligence" is called "lies." The billions of dollars that Halliburton and Bechtel have reaped in profits are called "war profiteering." The invasion of Iraq is called "illegal." The destruction of America's international standing is called "permanent." And Texaco/Phillips's high bid for Iraqi oil is called "why we are in Iraq."

4. I am ready to cry. I am so grateful to be able to read this in the
mainstream media...every time I watched Bush, listened to him, or read his statements I thought "WTF????" and then I would listen to the stupundits and they were saying how "presidential" and "compasionate" and "direct" he was... and I was doubting my own eyes, ears, and brain. If it had not been for DU, I would have thought I was going bananas.

6. I know exactly how you feel
"Up" has become "down". Some days I would wake up, watch the "news", listen the talking heads and wonder if I had fallen down the rabbit hole.

5. Bravo!!
The dissemination of "incomplete information" from "imperfect intelligence" is called "lies."

Is not imcomplete information from imperfect intelligence the same weak excuse Dubya and company used for why they did not stop the planes on Sept. 11th?

10. This letter would not have been printed even one month ago
IMHO, disregarding the fact that the subject of torture wasn't mainstream a month ago.

There has been a sea change. People are now able to say out loud the Chimpy is a monster and people are no longer saying "oh he's our fearless leader and stand behind the president in time of war, and...blah blah blah.

It is a beautiful sight to behold. I never thought we would get to this point.

13. I'd guess they ARE. Welcome to DU, by the way!
It is the custom of most papers to print letters that are, each unto itself, representative of a lot more letters along the same lines. If one person's writing this in and getting printed, it's because there are undoubtedly many more letters like this, only perhaps longer, less erudite, or whatever. If this letter-writer chose to put it down on paper and send it in, you can bet that means many others have been thinking the same thing, but just didn't get around to writing it down and sending it in, for whatever reason. You can take that to the bank.

12. I agree! I, too, feared that it might not happen in time...
and it is a great relief that the wave is beginning to crest and when it breaks, it will, I hope, wash away the detritus that is the bush admin.

15. Send the Globe some positive feedback - they'll need it.
Freepers will be swamping them with drool and slime - send the Globe editors an email to let them know we support this. If you click on the link in the original post, there's a "feedback" link in the bottom left-hand corner of the "letter" page.

A quick note of support will help let them know we'd like to see alot alot more of this.
