Jenna Bush is to graduate May 22 from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in English. Barbara Bush graduates May 24 with a bachelor's in humanities from Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
The Bushes will attend private dinners for family and friends in both cities — Saturday in Austin and Sunday in New Haven — but will not attend graduation ceremonies at either school, said Gordon Johndroe, the first lady's spokesman. If the Bushes were to attend, all guests would be required to stand in lines to go through metal detectors.
"The Bushes have tried to create an atmosphere where their daughters could go to school with some privacy and did not want to disrupt that any more on their last weekend," Johndroe said.
He said the twins would travel after graduation, perhaps work on their father's re-election campaign and then look for jobs.
The president will fly to Texas via Louisiana, stopping in Baton Rouge on Friday to deliver the commencement address at Louisiana State University and raise money for the GOP's Victory 2004, a get-out-the-vote fund. The president will spend Friday and Saturday night at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.
