My conservative Republican mother is voting for Kerry!

I am still in a bit of shock.

My mum called me today out of the blue, sobbing and ranting about "Bush's illegal war" and "have we learned nothing from Vietnam?!?"

Before I could get a word in edgewise, she started talking about Kerry and how she's voting for him because he's "intelligent and been to war and a smart man and 100 times more qualified than Bush."

This is from a woman who, in 2000, LOVED Dubya and thought Gore was an "arrogant elitist liberal."

BTW, she resides in a "swing state."

the truth is, there are decent Republicans out there.

ON EDIT: VERY, VERY few decent Republicans. (I should not write anything before my first cup of coffee).

6. The thing that stunned me was the ANGER

I mean, she's not just a little angry. . . she was sputtering! I've not heard her ever that mad before. Bush must have done something vis-a-vis the war that enraged her.

One of the reasons she is a Republican is that she viewed Vietnam as "LBJ's illegal war." Now she's seeing the same patterns over again, I think. At least that's all I can think of, but her thinking tends to mirror that of a lot of other Republicans.

She called me RIGHT after the latest polls, which show Bush in free-fall.

alas - the probability of this is near zero

as you have guessed - my dad is extremely conservative -- how conservative is he? He's sooooo conservative the makes limbaugh look liberal...

the best I can hope for is that he votes for a 3rd party conservative candidate or doesn't vote at all...

If he ever says he is voting for Kerry -- I think I'd faint
