More hypocrisy at White House - Andrew M. Greeley
http://www.dailysouthtown.com/southtown/columns/Acurrent/greeley.htm

The current shock and outrage at the White House and the Pentagon are as phony as a $17 bill.

The president might not have known what was happening specifically at Abu Ghraib, Iraq, but had to know at least in general how the CIA and military intelligence were "softening up" prisoners for interrogation. snip

If the president did not know, then he was guilty of what we used to call in the seminary "vincible" ignorance. He should have known, and there is no excuse for him not knowing. One can bet on it, the low-level grunts will be blamed and the CIA and the MI brass will go unscathed. Also, poor Don Rumsfeld may have to take the fall to cover for the president. snip

Is there any chance of winning the war in Iraq? Ought not we support the troops by insisting that they be brought home? Should not the United States specify the day — Jan. 1, Feb. 1, whenever — that we're out of there? Is there any other way it can end? All right, there will be national humiliation like the helicopters taking off from the roof of the embassy in Saigon. But that's going to happen anyway. snip

The president is the responsible person in this country; the buck stops at his desk, as Harry Truman said once and forever. He may scapegoat others, he may duck and weave, but either he knew what was going on or should have known.

Those Americans who will vote to re-elect him will support the man responsible for Abu Ghraib.

1. There should be NO DOUBT
that the president was aware of what was going on. I'd love to see a MoveOn-type group do a commercial featuring bush's "he had RAPE ROOMS..." with a background photo of the torture .... the concept of "plausible deniability" for a president is not new .... in fact, it was used by both the president and vice president in the Iran-Contra scandal. Then, as now, the extreme right wing was only upset that they were caught. Further, then, as now, there was a contest between a george bush and a John Kerry. There are a lot of old grudges involved in this election.

2. Fighting Retreat
There are not enough helicopters to get us out if it gets really ugly. Here is what the guy who invented the phrase "fourth generation warfare" has to say about it.

"One great snare and delusion lies in our path: the notion that we can always go by air. Already the Air Force is saying that if the southern supply lines are cut, as they were in the first half of April, air transport can fill the gap. Right, just as Goering promised the troops in Stalingrad. Not only does that assume American and coalition troops can hold the airports, it assumes they can get to the airports, which at the moment is problematic just between Baghdad and its airport. Worse, coups in places such as Saudi Arabia could see Islamic-flown F-15s and F-16s shooting down American C-5s and C-17s."

The snivelling hypocrisy and backpedalling backstabbery of this president have exceeded all expectation. His hollow words echo with a a sour thud throughout the land. Those that support him, and make apologies for him, share his culpability and will also share his eternal burden.
