and i can honestly say the same about kerry, i don't hate him, but i'm not crazy about him, and i WILL vote for him.

i could go into detail about why i'm not crazy about kerry, but i am staying focused and no one will entice me to vote for anyone other than kerry. i feel it's my duty as a democrat, and an american.

2. Sam Seder and Janeane Garofalo say voting is pragmatic, not art
You might like this article I wrote and/or the audio linked at the bottom of that webpage:

Voting Isn’t Art; Vote for John Kerry Even If You Agree with Ralph Nader, Say Sam Seder and Janeane Garofalo

by Eric Jaffa, May 11, 2004

The radio show, "The Majority Report Radio Show," co-hosted by Janeane Garofalo and Sam Seder, included a message on April 26, 2004 that voting isn’t art.

Sam Seder said that even if you don’t like some of the things Kerry has done (giving Bush authority for the Iraq War, voting for the Patriot Act, supporting Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon), there are still lots of differences between John Kerry and George W. Bush. For one, Kerry wouldn’t have started the Iraq War.

Vote for John Kerry and not Ralph Nader, as voting isn’t art, Sam Seder said.

Janeane Garofalo agreed.

SAM SEDER: Your vote is not an act of art. It is not an expression of your inner soul. It is not a way for you to show integrity. Voting is an extremely practical endeavor.
It is like saying, “there is something up at the top of those steps, so I will walk up to the top of those steps.”

It is not, “I don’t believe it should be at the top of those steps, and therefore I won’t walk up to get it.”

It is a very practical exercise.

JANEANE GAROFALO: You can be more artistic or more authentic in your daily life:

The way you that you live, the choices you make personally, the way you try to keep your candidates honest, the way you try to watchdog your media and watchdog your government.

You’re right, Sam, that is an interesting point about your vote: it should be art, but it isn’t. The reality is that it’s very pragmatic.

4. Even as art, there's the Bismarck quote
that politics is the art of the possible; or the amended quote that politics is the art of the best possible.

No matter how you look at it, a vote for anyone but Kerry is a vote for Bush.

5. It is pragmatic but it also must consider tactics
Edited on Sun May-16-04 09:53 AM by Az
In the case of the 2004 election we have a set of conditions which perhaps does require putting aside other interests. Bush and his backers as just such a threat that they must be stopped. Little else matters.

But it is this thinking that lead us to this state. Voting just to win or to deny the "opposition" has created this situation where so much is at steak. We have not been voting for candidates with strong ideas for nearly 2 decades now. Thus the actual ideas have gone to waste and the battle field has become defined by those on the right.

To borrow from Sun Tzu's Art of War we have been drawn into the Republican Field of Death. By not forcing them to challenge our tactics we have been forced into ground we cannot defend or attack from. Meanwhile they continue to drag the battle further into their own territory.

It is only by standing up and defining our territory that we can hope to win any real victories. Unless we do so our candidates will resemble Lieberman and Zell more and more. If this is what we offer to the people they will lose all sight of the ideals and thinking behind the Dem party. We will just become the alternate to the Republicans. And the alternate is always defined by what they oppose. We will just become a name. An empty shell with the banners and ribbons won from ages past.

3. I have voted on principle many times
In my heart I will be a Kucinich supporter, and I voted for him in the primary, but you can bet your booty I'm with you on this one.

This has to be about getting these criminals OUT of our government.

6. You forget what people thought of Clinton
Back in 91 he was considered boring, especially after the long speech he gave at the 1988 convention. He could surprise you like Clinton.
