Bush is falling the polls and I see nothing on the horizon which
is going to prop him, which leads me to this conclusion: something really, really bad is going to happen around election time. I think don't think we are looking at an October surprise. I think we are looking at a November surprise.

I fear it is going to be massive "terrorist" strikes all across the country the day before the election. Such a thing would paralyze the country and Bush could get on tv and perhaps declare martial law, or cancel the elections.

1. lots of things could prop Bush up
1) show trial of Saddam
2) supposed handover of power in Iraq
3) capturing Usama bin Laden
4) phony discovery of weapons-of-mass destruction in Iraq

Good point. I'd like for eveyone to call their Senators if they aren't among the coponsors of "The Voter Confidence Act" to require electronic voting machines to print paper ballots.

SPONSORS BELOW:

Graham, Bob - (D - FL) (sponsor)
Nelson, Bill - (D - FL)
Hollings, Ernest - (D - SC)
Lautenberg, Frank - (D - NJ)
Schumer, Charles - (D - NY)

Please ask your Senators to cosponsor The Voter Confidence Act, bill number S.1980, to protect the accuracy of the 2004 election.

Phone 1-800-839-5276 (Capitol Hill Switchboard), ask to be transferred to the office of one of your Senators, and leave a message requesting that the Senator cosponsor the bill.

sample phone words:

Hello, may I speak to the office of Senator ________?
(call transferred)

8. Phony discovery of WMD? Hmmm.
Kaddafi in Libya gave up 23.6 tons of WMD (mostly mustard gas, apparently) earlier this year. Where-o-where do you suppose that WMD is now? There were also some links posted here on DU from a Teheran news web site around then that WMD were being planted in Iraq.

2. That's Too Obvious
I've felt an attack on a nearby "friendly" country seems more realistic. Bring the pain close but not so close that people feel anything other than fear. When it's off-shore we don't have to find immediate guilt here and the regime can spin and speculate without having to be held accountable...something they will need desperately to do this fall.

Another 9/11 attack in this country could create a negative backlash on this regime and I'm sure the powerhungry wonks who run the BFEE have to know where the real limits are here. An attack would immediately bring up questions about why it happened again at the worst possible time.

The best thing this regime can pull out of it's hat is the "Kissinger Card"...the "peace is at hand" or some wild diplomatic venture that would catch everyone off guard. Another 9/11-style attack or even coughing up bin Laden is too predictable. Look at how iced Saddam is during this entire ordeal...I'll bet his trial is conveniently delayed pending the election as well.

Stay tuned...

6. Magic 8 Ball Likes That One...
If we need another terrorist patsy to go after.

I'm thinking more something that would shake the public and media ala the Anthrax scare...with lots of pictures and easy access to the American media machines so we can have 24/7 coverage.

I feel real bad writing and thinking this as I don't even want to venture into tinfoil hat land or even self-fulfilling prophecy. But I just sense it could be in a country where English is spoken...so Joe Six Pack hears and sees it close up, but still can't feel it.
