1. that was an amazing moment
thanks for your terrific play-by-play, LittleApple81!

i was rivoted by the action and couldn't type.

Hersh told them that it was coming out and that they (congress) BETTER be aggressive or they'd be trumped badly.

he told them that Senior Military Officers would tell them things that would "KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF."

as soon as possible. Because if they survive this one, our country is OVER.

2. I'll tell you, Gen. Taguba, for one, looked to me coerced...
and Sy paints him as an innocent who stumbled into the mess. Imagine how much pressure is being put on the rest of the Pentagon.

3. He is not going to let this go.
He's breaking this story wide open and pulling very high-ranking sources to get to the bottom of this. I think he's got a pretty good idea who's responsible and where this will go, but he can't expose everything because he has to protect his sources.

Therefore, he's asking Congress to give these people (likely his sources) protection so that the entire world can know the Bush administration's dirty secret.

"Murder Inc." - Israel's Shin Bet
http://www.etherzone.com/2004/raim051204.shtml
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A2044-2004May4.html

http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=2558

The only translator identified in the Taguba report is John Israel, supposedly a "contract translator" employed by the Titan Corp. Mr. Israel is furthermore described as not having a security clearance, an unusual condition for someone in his position – unless, of course, he's not an American, in which case it would be perfectly understandable.

So far, very interesting. But then it got even more interesting:

SEN. AKAKA: "General Taguba, your report finds that two contractors were either directly or indirectly responsible for the abuses at Abu Ghraib. Were either of these contracted personnel supervising soldiers or in a position to direct soldiers to take specific actions?"

GEN. TAGUBA: "Sir, they were not in any way supervising any soldiers, MP or otherwise. However, the guards, those who were involved, looked at them as competent authority as in the manner by which they described them, as the MI or by name or by function."

A reasonable interpretation of Taguba's somewhat garbled answer is that, yes, the MPs and soldiers who committed sadistic outrages against detainees acted under the influence and at the instigation of those they believed to be intelligence officers, some of whom were "third country nationals."

32. thank you for this audio link
I may have to listen again for the murder inc. But was struck by the last caller and the insaneness of wanting to further cover up. They call it too much media attention and partisan but without the pictures and attention nothing will or would be done. And that is what these RW do not get.

Yes it makes things less safe but the troops in Iraq are already less safe because the people there already knew months ago about this torture.

The RW continue to want us to pretend this is not huge.

It is huge. Our troops will have less safe environment if we don't curtail and stop this torture. If we don't stop guantanmo toooooooo.

I am so glad some are talking that others will at least be willing to listen to....

We tell our congress and media and others.....and nothing happened...

bush said in his state of the union....that 3000 less to worry about and that some we would not hear from at all.....he was already bragging....he was doing what those soldiers who are being put on trial for doing.......gloating in pictures....

Bush gloated about torture and murder in his statement in the state of the union address....now maybe if there had been a picture next to his head showing what they had done to the 3000 he mentioned....things might have changed then....

41. they did it in the 60's to try to kill Castro
new article in the Atlantic about how the CIA hired hit-men from Murder Inc. to try to assassinate Castro in the early 60's.

Johnson found out about it later and was pretty pissed off.

It's a pretty interesting article, mainly about Johnson and what he found out after he became pres.

8. the way Bob Scheiffer deffered to Hersh was remarkable
Hersh is definitely a made-man and a genius.

Today's MTP and Face the Nation were amazing. And we are still at the tip of the iceberg.

This is the CIA dumping BushCo. Period. Thank gawd!

14. Sy was definitely credible. You could see Sheiffer trying to contain his
anger, and he, too, seemed to be be sending the point to Levin and Graham that Congress has a responsibility to get to the bottom of this thing. After all, they did give this misadministration the authority to get us into this mess.

When Sy made the "knock your socks off" comment, I knew then, he knows exactly who did what and why. But he can only give us pieces of the puzzle so that he can continue getting information from his sources (which I think are both Pentagon and DOD officials).

24. Do you think Sy is only giving us piece by piece
to make sure this story is not going to go away in one news cycle? The first piece raised a ruckus but was cooling off by the end of its news cycle, then Sy dropped the next piece heating it up again.

Then Bush sent Powell out for damage control which helped some, but now Sy dropped this piece.

Sy is working the news like a pro he is.

27. Good point, Robbien.
Sy is an old news pro. He is working this story perfectly. Already, his story has generated the promise of Senate hearings. I think if there is sufficient progress made in holding the real perpetrators accountable, then Sy will let the situation play out. However, if we don't get any significant developments from Congressional hearings, we can expect him to drop another bomb. On FTN, he practically begged for Congress to investigate and get to the bottom of this.

21. maybe young reporters can learn SOMETHING!
Edited on Sun May-16-04 10:59 AM by baldearg
Maybe Hersh's example of what a real journalist is like and what a real competent journalist does will teach them something we can only hope.

Frankly, I've been very disgusted by the quality of journalism as of late. I've seen articles written that are are opinion or editorials and the article(s) don't even have bylines!

Wake up fools and learn how to be real journalists. It takes some work yes, but the rewards are oh so sweet!
