Headline news last night.
A young marine in Calif., will have the book thrown at him for missing 45 days of training. I think he tried to register C.O. A military prosecutor wants to try and make an example of him. If this story and trial gets national attention, drawing a parallel between this young man and bush*, more and more people will learn the truth about bush's "AWOL." Karl Rove had better get busy.

3. I feel kinda sorry for the marine
but if it helps to shine the light on the AWOL in chief then alright. Unfortunately, I don't have much faith that any of the media whores will make the connection and focus on the chimp.

4. News Article
"NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Marine reservist facing a court-martial here says he's being prosecuted for criticizing the military at anti-war rallies and for publicizing his application for conscientious objector status at a news conference.

The Marines argue they pursued charges against Lance Cpl. Stephen Funk because he skipped out on 47 days of training in defiance of orders by his commander.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled Monday, when Funk's attorney, Stephen Collier, intends to ask a military judge to dismiss the charge of "shirking important duty" on the basis that Funk has been selectively targeted.

"People go AWOL (absent without leave) all the time and they don't get court-martialed," says Collier, who has handled military clients off and on since the first Gulf War. "He's a conscientious objector who went public with his beliefs, and that's something that should be respected, not retaliated against."

5. Ya think Chimpy was a conscientious objector?
Maybe that's why he went AWOL. 'Course, he couldn't even say "conscientious", let alone spell it...

11. Oh, man. The image of him* even trying to say the word
"conscientious" sent me into fits of giggles, and will stay with me the rest of the day.

As frightening/ frustrating/ angering/ and completely insane as everything seems to have become to me, I truly welcome a much-needed fit of giggles.

Thank you, NeonLX! :hi:

7. Very wierd case.
Why in the heck would someone join the military and then become a conscientious objector? Obvously, this is a real issue when people are drafted, but I'm pretty skeptical if someone has volunteered.

According to the article, he also claims that he is gay, but that he doesn't want to use that as an excuse to get out of the military because it would be dishonest.

So he wants to get out of the military. But he doesn't really want to get out that badly. I get the feeling this person is just a little flaky.

Q: Why in the heck would someone join the military and then become a conscientious objector?

A: i could see a situation where a person joined the military w/ the highest reasoning, then upon seeing the reality of the situation re: iraq, saying with all honesty and conviction, "This is not what i signed up for, and this is not what this country is about." Of course, i am not talking about those that joined without thinking (their own fault) or those who joined just for the ed benefits.

Q: I get the feeling this person is just a little flaky.

A: maybe, but i'd have to know more.

on edit: and thanks for the job you do.

9. I am sure bush
thought enlisting in the air national guard was harmless enough, to keep him out of Vietnam war and then even miss his final year of service. With some du'ers good writing this story could go nation wide and focus the spotlight on bush's past embarrassing mis-deeds.

10. A member of the WWII German resistance group "The White Rose"
had been a soldier in the Wehrmacht and had served on the Eastern Front. After witnessing first-hand the atrocities the Nazis were committing over there, he swung a medical discharge and joined the anti-Hitler faction.

This marine obviously is too close to the idiocy in Iraq, and wants out. Who can blame him?
