We simply must have an enemy that we can fight to survive. This country would be in utter economic chaos and emotional trauma if we didn't support a huge, draining military that supplies many jobs and earns big corporations huge profits AND if we didn't have a group of people to hate.

1. we told islamic fundies that god was on their side against godless commies
isn't it true that many anti communists in america got the muslim fundamentalists on their side by talking about the godless commies and how god was on their (muslim fundie) side. and how we have to defeat them . didn't reagan call bin laden a freedom fighter ?

2. I don't know
The counter argument is that both Communism and Islamic Terrorists were/are real threats to the United States. Unless you believe in MIHOP, Terrorists did succeed at killing 3,000 of us on September 11th.

Not that I'm implying that that justifies the Bush Adminsitrations invasion of Iraq, which has been a disaster on many levels, and which had little to nothing to do with September 11th.

7. This is true.....
And the changing face of global politics causes alliances to be made and broken....

I was okay with fighting off Communism back then... (who's followers did egage in MANY acts of agression to force that system on weaker countries who wanted no part of it)

... and I am fine with fighting off radical Islamic funamentalists now...

Both can and have done a LOT of damage.

3. there is always a boogeyman
Before the godless Commies, it was the Nazis and before that it was the Huns in WW1, and before that it was somebody else and then somebody else prior to being the British, who are now are closest ally.

4. Wrong, communism is STILL the boogeyman
Perpetrated by the wingnuts. It's funny, twelve years after the fall of communism in Europe, and commie-baiting seems to have reared it's ugly head in the past couple years.

many Democrats and "liberals" are quite well-practiced in dragging that out as well.

6. I say we invent "SPACE COMMUNISTS"
It's difficult to hold this nation's attention. Fear is the easiest way to do it. Well, fear or a Wardrobe malfunction.

9. This idea of revolving alliances/enemies
is the main theme of Orwell's 1984.

By having an external enemy, and playing upon xenophobic tendencies in its own population, the government can suspend liberty, justify dishonesty, and press the political benefits of dealing with crisis.

It lends itself to other non material conflicts. The war on drugs, the war on pornography, and other feigned urgent issues of life.

10. Terror is the boogie man
Terror threats are nothing new. They are only now being used to scare us. This is a tactic perfected by the Nazis!

11. Gotta have one in order to have an excuse to sell arms and steal
resources. How else are we going to accomplish those things? The whole war on terrorism is a big con job designed to do just what it has done in Iraq....steal their stuff and sells arms throughout the world.
