Buying the Right Car Insurance
Edited on Mon May-17-04 10:12 AM by ribofunk
Going for the cheapest coverage can end up costing you big time. Here's how to get the right coverage, at the right price

---snip

Given that the average auto policy now costs nearly $900 a year, I know how tempting it is to try and cut corners on your coverage to save some money... I'll share some easy tips on how to strategically reduce your overall premium costs by making smart choices...

---snip

1. Have a Great Credit Score ...
2. Check Your Driver's License Record ...
3. Raise Your Deductible...
4. Focus on Boring, not Bling-Bling...
5. No Kidding Around...
6. The Marriage Gift...
7. Drop Collision Coverage if You've Got an Old Beater...

Despite the scary photo, I find Suze Orman's advice to be very sensible. Just something to think about.

1. Still doesn't work.
Boring 2002 Ford Ranger.
Deductable so high, I doubt I can cover it if i have a claim.
No Kids.
Good driveing record.
Crappy credit score, that's why I had to go talk to the "credit manager" with the velvet portrait of Earnhardt in his office out in the used lot instead of the guy my dad works with

but I do pay considerable less that $900 a year, no lizard involved. Shit, $900 a year? If I payed $900 a year, I'd better be driving an XJ.....

3. Hey, I'm Paying Almost $1200 per Year
with GEICO. Maybe it's worth checking out those comparison links.

4. Geico was higher than the Moon.
I pay less than $700 a year with State Farm (which is what my father pays on an F-150 AND a new Jaguar!) And I checked with Geico, I checked with Illinois Farmer's, I checked with Progressive, and they were all about 50% higher.

OK, so I don't pay as much as everyone else in this thread, but I'm 47 years old, have a "clean" driving record, Don't own "sporty", and live so far out in the sticks that "winter supplies" is not just a survivalist fantasy.

Car insurance is just another expense, like Cable TeeVee, but unlike the incoming sewer line, you can't "opt-out" without the BMV getting all pissy. Maybe if I was a shitty driver who had the claims office on speed-dial I'd feel differently.

2. I pay $990 every six months
for two cars, and excellent driving and cridit records, and $500 deductibles blahblahblah.

The only advice I can give is buy it from Progressive.
