Answer to the *we should be able to torture when there's a ticking bomb
So we all have heard it before, people saying *WHAT IF, there's a timebomb somewhere, and this guy knows where it's located, then we should torture him to get the information if he doesn't want to tell us!*, for some time I've come up with the answer NO - we just CANNOT torture -Geneva convention etc. etc. and ofcourse cause it's just RIDICULOUS-, but they just can't seem to grasp that idea ....... soooo, after watching a long documentary about a man who has been held for 4 years by some terrorists he came with the answer in regard to all of that nonsense:

By torturing someone, you do NOT have ANY guarentees of getting the CORRECT information, so there you go......torture is useless.

And ofcourse when torturing someone, you have degraded yourself and this person can no longer stand for democracy.

End of thoughtstream......

1. There is asimple historical
precedent

Israel adopted that standard in the 1980s, it made sense right?

Well the slipery slope was opened and in 1998 the Supreme Court had to
intervene.

The moment you start down that slipery slope you loose much of YOUR humanity and the ENEMY wins... that is his or her goal, to change the society under attack

This also means that the Enemy has so far won, as this society is being changed in ways that are amazing

2. Its simpler than that
By torturing we give permission to the opposition (whether in this crisis or the next) to torture our people.

Banning torture is as much for us as it is for those we are attacking. By dropping our standard of treatment we allow them to drop their standard of treatment. If we blink in the face of an enemy that does not play by our rules then we merely give permission to the next enemy to play by the standards we set.

Its a question of how do you want your child to be treated should they become a prisoner in the next conflict.

4. AND, it's astonishing how many time bomb start ticking
When you make that the exception. I won't say there aren't any circumstances, but I have yet to hear the scenario where I would approve of torture. And allowing it in one circumstance usually leads to that circumstance becoming increasingly likely for all manner of things. Kind of like drug tests for jobs. Makes sense if you're talking about an airline pilot. Makes a whole lot less sense if you're talking about a high school chess team competitor. But they both get tested in our society.

the neighbor (and his kids) who lives next door to the guy with the ticking time bomb? Do you torture them too? Where does it stop?
