Question for Minority DU'ers
Do you think minorities face problems unique to them in America and if so how would you like them addressed?

7. Ok....
I'm proud to be a minority. And I know many people who are too. Stop trying to cause an argument where an argument doesn't belong. My question is a serious one and one that isn't meant to spark debate but an open and honest discussion. Excuse me, but everyone would love 100% equality but we just aren't there yet. So you can't be blind to racism b/c it exists. And how do we progress? By talking about it and by addressing it and figuring out ways to make things better.

2. Yes, they do.
Although things aren't as segregated at they were before the civil rights movement, minorities still have fewer opportunities to gain the American dream. Starting with education, schools in minority neighborhoods aren't preparing their students as well as in affluent white neighborhoods because they aren't funded as well due to the neighborhoods being poorer.

In spite of laws for equal opportunity employment, whites will still get the better jobs, often because they were able to obtain a better education. There is still a glass ceiling for minorities and women.

10. I just heard yesterday that the America ranks #1 in the disparity between
the education received by the poor and the wealthy.

I have no idea how you avoid having a permanent underclass if you can't put everyone on as equal of an educational footing as possbile.

free tuition in the state college and university system, the GI bill and other aids in California. Then along came Ronald Reagan and Howard Jarvis after him and they ruined the whole thing.

3. Do you have time for a bit of a read
if so check out the hull house report Minding the Gap .Did you know it will take around 200 years to close the gulf between us and whites? here is a little tidbit
"Whites are 125% more likely to use marijuana than blacks; 181% more likely to use cocaine; 431% more likely to use inhalants; 516% more likely to use LSD. And yet blacks account for 79% of all drug arrests."

used to live in the rio grande valley and many of my friends were migrant workers on top everything else their education would suffer because they were were moving around alot. Also the language issue alot of my friends only spoke a little bit of english. The lack of bi lingual programs is hurting school children

6. If you're a kid,
Go find out who the people in your "greater neighborhood" are. If you're over 25, GET BENT.

8. That statement
is just stupid. You can't turn a blind eye towards racism in America. YOu can't act like it doesn't exist.

13. I disagree
not that racism doesnt exist it obviously does, and probably always will, as you cant force people to not have thier own preferances.

However you can turn a blind eye to it, sometimes. Why should I spend anytime paying attention to some dumb ass cracker on the internet or elsewhere who are racist or whatever. It doesnt effect me personally so why should I care what they spout off.

14. Right..."sometimes"
But I'm just saying you can't pretend it doesn't exist at all. I don't know how my question infuriated a couple of people here. Maybe someone can explain this to me?

I dont think that I do.

Not too many racial problems here in South Texas where people like me are the majority.

15. yes we do
I think things are better for minorities in America than they were 50 years ago. But people of color certainly face unique challenges.

For example, even with comparable credit, it is still much more difficult for a minority to get a home loan than a white person. Minority-populated areas receive less funding for education. If you have a name that sounds like you might be black, your resume is 10 times as likely to be rejected right off the bat. If you're a minority you will be harassed by the police for driving your car, or even just for walking down the street.

In many ways, minorities are still second class citizens in Amerika.

Of course, I'd love to do something about inequality. Of course, wouldn't you?
