Don't Wave the US Flag? Gee, Thanks, Smirk.
U.S. athletes told to cool it at Olympics

By Simon Hart
LONDON SUNDAY TELEGRAPH

NEW YORK — American athletes have been warned not to wave the U.S. flag during their medal celebrations at this summer's Olympic Games in Athens, for fear of provoking crowd hostility and harming the country's already-battered public image.
The spectacle of victorious athletes grabbing a national flag and parading it around the stadium is a familiar part of international sporting competition, but U.S. Olympic officials have ordered their 550-strong team to exercise restraint and avoid any jingoistic behavior

1. Finally we have an event where we can be proud of ourselves
and we aren't allowed to show it.

2. The United States of America is a pariah state.
This is to be expected:
- when we allow war profiteers to take control of our country.
- when we spend billions and billions of dollars on war.
- when we launch aggressive wars.
- when our leaders treat our allies with contempt.
- when our Commander In Chief allows soldiers to torture prisoners.
- when we are the most environmentally destructive and wasteful people that ever lived.

We will need our friends to help us get out of this mess. But we need to help ourselves more than anything else.

3. golly
How things have changed.
Remember all those $2.00 plastic car flags from a year ago fluttering down the highways?
Flag doormats, towels, T shirts, dishes, even nurses scrubs adorned with the flag. As though if only we had enough flags, the war would really be a good thing. Got so carried away with the symbol, we forgot the substance of what it is supposed to represent. Kinda like dubyas presidency.
