Colson Comments 'One Of The Stupidest Things Said About The Abu Ghraib Scandal To Date,' Observes AU's Lynn

Two leaders of the Religious Right have blamed the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal on a remarkable source: watching too much MTV.

Chuck Colson spoke this week at a pastors' briefing in Washington sponsored by the Family Research Council. In a May 12 e-mail to supporters, FRC President Tony Perkins observed, "As Chuck Colson pointed out at yesterday's Pastors' Briefing, when you mix young people who grew up on a steady diet of MTV and pornography with a prison environment, you get the abuse at Abu Ghraib."

Perkins also accused "the liberal media" of using the photos "in an effort to damage the Bush Administration."

1. These guys are so predictable you could set your watch by them
Apparently they don't read the New Yorker. (Or do Rumfilled and Smirky watch MTV?)

3. these people are very dangerous
they will do anything to protect Bush. They've hijacked the Republican Party, and the GOP is now doing their bidding in everything.

For details of how the religious right hijacked the republican party check out http://www.TheocracyWatch.org/

4. He forgot about Schwarzenegger movies!
Oh and by the way how UN-AMERICAN is it to characterize our troops as people "who grew up on a steady diet of MTV and pornography?" What about GW who grew up on a steady diet of Jack Daniels and cocaine?

Man, and I thought all of this was because of Tinky-Winky!

5. Just because Beavis and Butthead are in charge
doesn't mean MTV has anything to do with it.

OH, how I pray for our corrupted youth, Ha, Ha.

I don't watch MTV myself, but think I might check it out now and then. Is there an online link?

10. (un?)fortunately, beavis and butthead haven't been on MTV
for several years now (the creator of the show, who's name escapes me) quit to make King of the Hill (some of the characters are remarkably similiar)

it's really too bad, i'm sure they would have satirized the bush administration to death - they did ok with clinton, but since the whole premise of the show was that no matter who incredibly moronic b&b were, all adults were even stupider - it was a bit difficult fitting clinton into the stupid pigeonhole but that would no longer be a hinderance for the current "president"

7. How does he explain all those people who went to lynchings?
Edited on Tue May-18-04 08:08 AM by JHB
Remember the old photos of people having a party while the mangled corpse of a black guy or two hangs from a tree in their midst?

Maybe Chuck Colson can explain what MTV has to do with THAT?

Or maybe Chuck can remember there's a COMMANDMENT against "bearing false witness against thy neighbor" and keep his old "chief dirty trikster" mouth shut.

8. I don't remember
seeing any rappers or rock stars in the Iraq abuse pictures. I didn't see any bling bling or electric guitars even in the back shots of the prison. I will become more vigilant in searching for these clues.

11. One would think they'd make better videos.
Obviously, they learned nothing from MTV.

13. Yep. I agree 100% on this. This is the essence of

all the Kulturcampf BS. IMO this torture/abuse in the military has been a psycological bombshell for mainstream America. These kids trumpeted as the finest, bravest, best, blah, blah are not what they are cracked up to be.

When it comes out that the torturers are devout Christians and more are exposed, which there most certainly will be, then America will be forced to deal with it. I have always thought that Christian fundamentalists are some of the most warped whackos on the planet. Religion is a form of madness; it makes you believe and trumpet things like Creationism and it is all peer pressure.

Anyone that can make you believe absurdities can get you to do evil things-- Voltaire
