how the California Recall will temporarily affect Presidential race
The California Recall is dominating the political news. It is all Arnold or will Davis survive? The presidential candidates on the democratic side will be sidelined while this plays out at the national level over the next two months--unless they get innovative and get involved in the recall campaign to some extent.

What do you think will be the consequences of this? This has been the Summer of Howard Dean with lots of coverage. Will this be a boom to the Dean campaign since all the major political news in the next two months will be on the California recall and the last thing voters will remember of the presidential race is the Dean surge?

1. I think the net effect will be wash
It's the summer California Special Freak Show, coming soon to a church parking lot near you. By end of day on October 8 or 9 it will all be over and we can all return to our regularly scheduled Presidential Election Freak Show.

2. After Ahhnold is INSTALLED as The Governator-
The California Economy will have an amazing turnaround-
Due mostly to increased military spending being directed to the state, in hopes of getting all those nice electoral votes in the "R" column in 2004.

3. Dean isn't as dependent on the media as the other candidates are
Yes, media coverage promotes his name faster among the general public, but last week was Dean Week in the media and he's got his name out there.

Dean Meetups are rising and it's person-to-person contact that generates new Dean supporters.

5. I agree-Dean got his 15 minutes just in time
before the California Recall circus came to town.

August/September is dead line anway, at least until mid-September when people are getting the kids back in schools, etc. It's one of the most fallow and difficult times for any campaign.

As long as any candidate (and so far I lean Dean but have not been to my meetup or taken any other action) focuses on money and grass roots organizing at this time, things will be OK.

However, nothing will happen presidentially in California for a couple of months. At best, things will freeze in place. At worst, Rove et al will figure out some way to turn this to their advantage.
