BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. forces beat three Iraqis working for Reuters and subjected them to sexual and religious taunts and humiliation during their detention last January in a military camp near Falluja, the three said Tuesday.

The three first told Reuters of the ordeal after their release but only decided to make it public when the U.S. military said there was no evidence they had been abused, and following the exposure of similar mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad.

An Iraqi journalist working for U.S. network NBC, who was arrested with the Reuters staff, also said he had been beaten and mistreated, NBC said Tuesday.

Two of the three Reuters staff said they had been forced to insert a finger into their anus and then lick it, and were forced to put shoes in their mouths, particularly humiliating in Arab culture.

All three said they were forced to make demeaning gestures as soldiers laughed, taunted them and took photographs. They said they did not want to give details publicly earlier because of the degrading nature of the abuse.

6. The abuse is apparently rampant!
The saddest part is that the US is trying to hide the truth. If they really thought what they were doing was the right thing, they wouldn't be trying so hard to blame 6 or 7 soldiers ("bad apples").

8. And this didn't happen at a prison...
it happened "in a military camp near Falluja". I wonder when there will be questions on all the other places, outside of prisons, that this horror is happening.

4. "forced to insert a finger into their anus and then lick it"
apparently there are photographs of this as well.

"soldiers laughed, taunted them, and took photographs"

"When I saw the Abu Ghraib photographs, I wept," Ureibi said Tuesday. "I saw they had suffered like we had."

Ureibi, who understands English better than the other two detainees, said soldiers told him they wanted to have sex with him, and he was afraid he would be raped."

Good God. This needs to come out.

I AM SO DISGUSTED.

10. And enlisted personnel from boonies know about "shoes in mouths?"
Edited on Tue May-18-04 03:50 PM by mouse7
That's an incredibly specific cultural taboo that only US graduate students would have a remote chance in hell of knowing. The disgusting stuff could have been arrived at through... well... simply being disgusting, but SHOES IN THE MOUTH? Oh... come on.

Only HIGHLY trained interrogators with access to vast socialogy and anthropology references could come up with that one.

11. The US military seems fixated on anal penetration...
Actually, I have a theory on this.

I remember reading a short essay years ago about the military's obsession with scatology. "In the Shit", 'Up shit creek', "You're shit", shit, shit, etc...especially in boot camp.

The author noted that when the great apes have dominance 'battles' in the wild, they take to throwing their feces at each other. His theory was that the military's scatological fixation was an outgrowth of this somehow -- that (especially male) primates associate aggression with feces.

Perhaps this fixation on anal penetration the US Military seems to have is another outgrowth of this -- taken to it's most sadistic American extreme, of course. By anally penetrating an Iraqi, or forcing them to do itto themselves, they feel they prove their dominance over them.

Just a thought.

I suppose another possibility is that the US Military is full of violent rapists with tendencies toward homoerotic sadism.

Wouldn't rule anything out at this point.

13. There is clearly a pattern and policy of abuse extending beyond Abu Ghraib

The simililarities cannot be coincidental.
