3. wait until the costs roll onto the food prices...time to garden! I recall
in 1979 when my daughter was born. When I filled up my tank just before I went into the hospital, in early May, 1979, gas was like...I dunno...69 cents a gallon. Then I gave birth and didn't drive nor have time to watch tv for 6 weeks. When I went out in my car for the first time after she was born and went to fill up, I seriously wondered if I was hallucinating. I think the price went to $1.25 or so. The next problem was that the cost of transporting food went sky high....I remember literally, literally breaking into a sweat waiting for the cashier's total at the grocery store. It was nauseating. Sometimes we can choose other transportation methods or cost savings, but unless you have land to garden, you are at the mercy for food costs.

Edited on Tue May-18-04 06:08 PM by Doug Decker
Gone to oil giants every one.

Oh, when will they ever learn,
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Please check this link: http://www.hoovers.com/exxon-mobil/--ID__10537--/free-co-fin-annual.xhtml

Look at the TOTAL NET INCOME line. That's where the money went.

14. That's eventual, but right now I'm compelled to agree with those that say
what's happening is unfettered greed. Oil prices are being artificially inflated. I wonder why.

23. I think they've always been artificially deflated.
However, if you factor in your tax dollars, which support the huge military (and supporting bureacracy) that we need to make sure we have oil, then the real price of a gallon of gas is probably $10 to 15 dollars.

So, we're getting robbed a bunch of ways. Through military spending AND at the wholesale/retail levels. Mostly, it's our fault for being such a huge consumer society.

We use too much gas and oil. It was always our Achilles Heel, and now the chickens have come home to roost.

By all means, let's use it as a campaign issue. But it's really much, much more than liberal/conservative democrat/republican BS.

We need to alter our way of life DRASTICALLY, if we want to survive.

24. Global Oil Peak is not one event
It will rise up as a series of seemingly unrelated events.

Oscillation between economic recessions and rebound
Collapse of the real estate bubble
Social unrest
War
Interruptions in supply and price spikes due to a lack of elasticity in the system
Market speculation (likely the cause of current spike in gas prices)
Blackouts/brownouts
Food shortages
Political mischief

9. Oil company profits are out of control!
At record highs, in fact. Some coincidence, eh? Not to forget the Big Oil Boys squatting in the White House!

Why is nobody crying "windfall profits" and "gouging"?

12. What was the right wing excuse when President Clinton
was in office and gas prices soared? Oh yeah lack of refineries because Clinton didn't have an energy plan, blah blah blah..

$2.06 a gallon here in Indiana. We need the truckers to shut down the interstate highway systems all across the nation.
