19. We got it on 9-11

Because the Boosh gang was asleep at the wheel. No we didn't deserve that at all.

If we get booed at the olympics, it will be for the war with Iraq, complete with prisoner torture et. al. Remember, Iraq was NOT a threat to the US and had NOTHING TO DO with 9-11.

Do the olympic athletes really deserve it? No. Does Bushco deserve it? Definitely.

The terrorists are in the White House. This is why we are being booed. Because we do nothing but wreak terrorism across the planet.

Not sure what got you TSed, but I just wanted to say that I agree with this post 100%. I also want to add that it isn't our athletes that deserve the wrath drawn by the administration's actions. Booing our olympic team is like thrashing the kids for their father's misdeeds.

5. Big time! I suspect Americans won't be chanting USA USA USA
there as loudly or as often as in past Olympiads.

Heck, if I was there I would probably disguise myself as a Frenchman to avoid any hassles or terror.

I love the Olympics but wouldn't go this year if someone paid my way. I went to the '84 LA Olympics and had a fabulous time. But we Americans would be targets this year.

Bush will use it as a rallying cry for reelection:mad:

dont put it past republicans to something as sacred as the olympics and contort it for their own political gain.

15. They've always waved the flag
and everyone has eaten it up. The deserve to be able to wave the flag, as much as any one else.

If the anti-Americanism is thick (and it will be) it will make the sheeple bahhh about how the rest of the world can fuck off.

Tell me I'm wrong.

Personally, I'm pulling for the Iraqi athletes to do well. They deserve it. I think they are going to use their old (read pre-American occupation) flag.

22. Remember the US Sprint Relay team in Sydney
really overdid the muscle flexing and flag waving, and world opinion was not kind. And that is when the world liked us.

The Olympics has become a total sham anyway, especially the TV coverage we get here in the US

14. True in a sense, but the modern Olympics has nationalized sport.
Edited on Tue May-18-04 09:13 PM by Minstrel Boy
American coverage is a two-week jingoistic binge.

I feel sorry for the athletes, but they're not just athletes: they're also flag bearers. And any honour or shame that the flag represents, they will also.

16. Yes, but more often than not
Edited on Tue May-18-04 09:18 PM by Sandpiper
These athletes are just pawns of nationalistic sentiment. Some of them are willing pawns, but most them only care about the opportunity to compete on the world's largest stage.

And sometimes, athletes even make a point of showing that their representing the US Olympic team does not equate to their endorsement of US policy.

Like Tommie Smith and John Carlos in 1968.

Fears grow over security chaos at Athens Olympics in terrorist crisis

...
<snip>
Tennis champion Serena Williams added to the debate in the US, where 52 per cent of people believe a strike in Athens is likely. She admitted that she and her sister Venus might not defend their Olympic doubles title because 'I think my security and my safety and my life is a little bit more important than tennis, and so if it became a real concern to where I personally wouldn't feel comfortable, then I wouldn't go to Athens'.

Greece faces difficulties delivering on Ikonomou's promised 'absolute security': it has one of the longest borders in Europe, anti-Americanism is widespread and it is next door to Turkey, where the British Embassy was bombed in November. A javelin's throw from the US Embassy, someone has spray-painted on a wall 'USA Killers', with the 'S' of USA turned into a swastika, and 'terrorist' above Bush's head.

NBA stars shun Olympics over security concerns

National Basketball Association stars are staying home from the Athens Olympics, partly over safety concerns, but United States coach Larry Brown is confident he will have the talent to win gold.

"I don't think the league would send us over the Athens if they didn't think the security was adequate," Brown said.

"I don't want to change my life because of what's happening over there."

US stars were pushed to the brink of defeat twice by Lithuania at the Sydney Olympics and a roster of second-tier talent finished sixth at last year's world championships in Indianapolis. So absent stars are of grave concern.

"We have enough great ones out there," Brown said.

"I think we will send an Olympic team the country can be proud of."

pride is all about ego. this is so much bigger and more important than ego. they boo us, so be it. the world has a reason to be angry with us. and i hope our athletes will have the courage to face it and do their best, to shine. and do well.

i dont like this go to olympics. they are special to me. growing up was a big thing sitting as family adn watching. i was close to making it for swimming a couple decades ago.

what is the saying about pride, will take you down

24. I think so and I will be there.
I will be there for 8 days of the games and am going to be at 5 events. I can't wait. I think it would have been a dream come true to wave the American flag in a foreign land and support our athletes. Fortunately, I don't want to die so I will not do that.

BTW, I am Greek-American so I would also wave the Greek flag. I was oping to go to Germany for the World Cup in 2006. I might have to ixnay that trip depending on who gets elected this year.

I love other people, I just don't know if they love what my passport says.

Even with four more years of Bush.

That America is currently not as popular as it used to be does not, and will not translate to problems for American tourists. Just IMHO, of course.

39. It's not that bad
People in Germany do differentiate between the American Government (and policy) and people that happen to live there. Well, at least I do, and so do the people I know.

I just would abstain from an over-the-top-display of patriotism. And maybe remember that anything that counts as "normal patriotism" in America is seen as waaaay over the top in Germany ;)

But even a Bush-supporter would not have to fear more than a good dose of dispute and argument. I don't think that any sane person over here would resort to violence.

...pulling out a Anti-Bush message in the middle of the parade? Or an athlete who just won the gold and is standing on the award/medal podium opens up their official red/white & blue olympic wear and inside is a shirt that says F**k Bush....Talk about cheers! I wonder if any of our athletes have the courage? I certainly hope so...I'll buy their Wheaties the rest of my life!

What I'd like to hear at the Olympics is recurring chants of "Impeach Bush and his PNAC cronies" every time an American athlete takes the field.

40. The American athletes will
not be booed or whistled at the Olympics. Europeans generally whistle, not boo, to show their disdain.

The team will be greeted by polite applause, as will all the other participating nations, at the opening ceremony. Even at the height of the Cold War, I don't remember the Soviet team being booed or whistled at during the Olympics.

Most of the spectators in the stands at the various events know that the present misadministration, not the athletes, design the foreign policy of the United States.

You can be sure of one thing though, "Commander Bunnypants" won't be anywhere near Athens. I'm sure he'll be at the pig farm in Crawford resting up for his appearances at the Repuke convention in NYC.

As for the television coverage on NBC, I cringe thinking about it. The coverage from Sydney absolutely sucked and I'm sure it will be as bad, if not worse, this time around.
