Is there anyone out there on inactive reserve?...
...Hoping you aren't activated? Or have they already called you back? I did 10+ years active duty so I wasn't worried but then I heard Randi Rhodes talk about the IRR and started wondering if I would be able to prove I did all of my time.

2. Don't depend on it.
Many years after my discharge the draft board sent me a letter saying they had no record of my service completion. I had to bring my discharge papers down to show them.

Keep your papers in a safe place.

5. I registered a copy of my DD214...
...in the courthouse in Clarksville TN immediately after getting it at Fort Campbell. A few years later a tornado blew the courthouse away. I hope I am not asked to prove it.

9. You should have a document saying that you completed your requirements
I was drafted for 2 years and had to be in inactive reserves for 4 more years. I got a form when that 4 years was up saying that I had fulfilled my obligation.

3. My husband is IRR
Edited on Wed May-19-04 04:37 PM by truthseeker1
He put in 7 years active duty - so how does that work? He got out in '99 so is it four years from the time he got out? Or could they call him back for four more additional years?

We haven't been worried much because he was AF and they'll probably be calling back mostly Army/infantry guys. Plus he was support, not a pilot. But.....who knows, if they need 'em, I guess they are getting serious about calling in IRRs before going to the draft. And the draft is looking more and more likely.

6. Anybody who enlists owes the military...
...8 years. If you enlist under delayed entry the delay time counts against your 8 years. If you haven't completed 8 years upon your discharge you owe the remainder in IRR.

7. Here's a link
http://www.defenselink.mil/ra/secondary/componentsfaq.html

I would guess he is in the standby reserve- unless he joined a reserve unit after active duty (that's what I did). I'm pretty sure we are in "partial mobilization" mode now- the president can recall without congress. If yor husband is in standby reserve he can only be called by congress (not *) as part of a "full mobilization".

4. Be ready for anything. Here's an article in the May 12 Army Times....
Army screens 118,000 inactive reservists for possible call-up
<http://www.armytimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-2913503.php>

Excerpt:

"The Army has begun screening members of the Individual Ready Reserve to determine who would be available to be called to active duty if needed, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The soldiers are not formally attached to any specific reserve unit but would be assigned to an active or reserve unit if needed.

None of the 118,000 IRR soldiers has been called up involuntarily so far, said Lt. Col. Burt Masters, a spokesman for the Army’s Human Resources Command in St. Louis. Some IRR members could be called up once the screening is finished, he said."

8. Are there requirements to be met? What if the IRR person is out
of shape or injured from something? I could image someone out of the military for say 4 years being a few pounds overweight, for instance. Woudl they be reprimanded or just passed over?

11. Don't Owe No Time
I did 13 years active duty, I have my copy of my DD214, and I've been out since 1991, that's 13 more years.

I don't owe Uncle Sam any more of my time.

Does anyone know - will these people be able
