Sen. Fitz-Gerald Charges Republican Lawyer for the General Assembly Biased (from the Colorado Senate Democrats)
Richard Westfall, the lawyer representing the Colorado General Assembly in the court battle over redistricting, acknowledged Tuesday on the Greg Dobbs morning show, KNRC, that he was working for the Republican majority and will not communicate with the minority party leadership. This acknowledgment raises the question of Westfall's ability to represent the entire General Assembly in an unbiased manner.
"Mr. Westfall testified extensively in committee in favor of the Republican map and is continuing to defend the partisan Republican map on the taxpayers dime, without any accountability to the entire General Assembly," said Sen. Minority Leader Joan Fitz-Gerald. "To dispel any concerns about bias Mr. Westfall needs to tell all the people of Colorado what he knew and when he knew it. I am calling on Sen. Andrews and the Republican party to stop charging the taxpayers of Colorado for what is clearly a GOP fight."
During the final hours of the legislative term this May, Republicans rammed through a redistricting bill using unconstitutional tactics that disenfranchised tens of thousands of Colorado voters. Richard Westfall, who himself acknowledged today to being a Republican activist was hired by Republicans to defend this GOP power grab. Westfall was the attorney of record for Congress Bob Beauprez when he ran for the 7th Congressional District. Congressman Beauprez is by far the biggest beneficiary from the new congressional district map.
"The people of Colorado should be aware that Republicans have used tax dollars to further their political ambitions," said Senator Joan Fitz-Gerald. "This is a disrespectful and shameful display of partisanship at the taxpayers expense."
